A Tribute

Being an avid reader of the magazine, I am so glad that Star Campus has started a letters/opinion page. Truth to be told, “Star Campus” is a one of a kind publication in Bangladesh and one with a very eclectic, diverse, and useful content. Let me use your pages to pay tribute to my English literature teacher Mrs Nusrat Huq (then at Maple Leaf, now at Sunbeams) whose strict dedication to teaching the classics of English helped me become an afficionado of reading and writing, for both work and pleasure. I didn't appreciate Mrs Huq's demanding standards then, but in my thirties I realize that she was (and is) one of the finest high school teachers that can be, one who instills the love of language in young minds. When my coworkers or students ask who made me such a fan of Shakespeare, Jane Austen, or Charles Dickens, I smile wryly and respond “my teacher in Dhaka”.

Politicians versus Common People

It is a culture in Bangladesh that ordinary people always find themselves weak against the muscle power of the political leaders. The right of the general people is being violated by these political goons all the time. Despite having a lot of potential, our country is not getting the much needed development due to its constantly instable political scenario. Now the ruling party and the opposition are confronting each other over the question of the caretaker government. However, the ultimate sufferers from this bitter confrontation are the ordinary people. Politicians should ensure congenial political atmosphere, order of law and resolve gas and power crisis to draw the attention of foreign investors. Both the government and opposition parties should try to resolve all their disputed issues through discussion. Otherwise, this endless struggle of the common people is going to ruin our country one day.

A Student's Plea

National university is the largest university of Bangladesh. A lot of Bangladeshi students graduate from this university every year. However the students from this university often suffer from long session jams. It's very disappointing to see that the authorities concerned are not taking any effective steps to resolve this problem. Problems like session jams bring in new problems such as high unemployment rates and social unrest. It is high time to take measures to reduce session jams in National University and save the future of millions of young people,

Social Media Matters

Does Facebook play a critical role in defining who you are? It certainly does. I had no Facebook account till college, thinking it would be a waste of valuable time. However, my over-jubilant friends made a fake account of mine with an inappropriate photo, depicting me as a hateful and mundane character and blemishing my so-called holy identity. And most people thought that the account was real and I was dumbfounded disgrace to see myself humiliated for no reason at all. Entangled in this vicious circle of humiliation, I became desolate and powerless over my own self. I don't remember whether it was me giving up or they finally got bored. Probably, they got poor grades in the O'Level Examinations that forced them to withdraw and call 'quits'. See, if you are a dad or mom, I advise you to let your children have a Facebook account. Nowadays, it is considered as a vital representation of your true self. Therefore, Facebook matters a lot.
