Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) observed its first convocation on Monday, March 21, 2011 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC). One Thousand two hundred and eighty three graduates, from different disciplines, were awarded degrees. Present at the ceremony were the chancellor of the university Md. Zillur Rahman, President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The Special Guests of the programme were Professor Dr. Alauddin Ahmed, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Education, Social Development and Political Affairs and Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh. Eminent Economist and Chairman of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Professor Rehman Sobhan, was the Convocation Speaker.
The Deans of the six Faculties of BUBT presented the students to the President, while he conferred degrees to them. Six graduates were awarded gold medals for their outstanding educational achievement. Three of them received Chancellor's gold medal -- Noor-E-Fatematul Jannat (MBA 7th Intake), Md. Asafur Rahman (MBA 10th Intake) and Md. Shakhawat Hossain Bhuiya (MBA 11th Intake). The Vice Chancellor's gold medal was awarded to Benojir Kabir Pinky (BBA 12th Intake) and Md. Zalal Uddin (LLB 3rd Intake). Habib Md. Enayet (MBA 10th Intake) received the BUBT Trust Chairman's gold medal.
Students were seen posing for snaps, after the ceremony, with their friends and teachers. One of the graduates from the Department of English, Rukaiya Ferdousi, was beaming with pride. “It is really a great day in every student's life and I feel honoured to be among the eminent personalities of my country. In a moment's flashback I can recollect what BUBT gave me throughout my student life. What I learnt from my teachers, my class-mates and from my university, will guide me to move on till the last breath of my life. I am proud to be a student of BUBT.”
Among 1,283 graduates, 398 students achieved their degrees from BBA programme, 239 from MBA (Regular) and 05 from MBA (Executive) programme, 33 from BA (Hons) in English, 07 from MA in English , 30 from MA in ELT, 20 graduates from MSc. In Economics, 07 from LL.B Hons, 408 students from LL.B (2 year programme), 48 from LL.M and 81 graduates from MSc in the Mathematics programme.
One of the gold medalists, Benojir Kabir Pinky said, “This is a rare achievement, indeed, and I got the recognition of my continuous efforts and hard work. I must mention the continuous guidance of my respected teachers throughout my student life. I really can't express my feelings in words.”
