Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr in Turkey
Sacred throughout the Islamic world, the holy month of Ramadan has once again been a time we Muslims have fulfilled our religious obligations. By abstaining from eating and drinking, by controlling our greed, anger, hatred and falsehood we have purified our body and soul. We believe that we have thus attained high qualities and virtues. We have performed our five times a day and tarafih prayers. Our fasting for thirty days and our prayers have protected us from evil forces. Religious beliefs and obligations aside, Ramadan is also a festive time celebrated by us Muslims in Turkey with joy and enthusiasm.
Eid-ul-Fitr at the end of Ramadan, a time of rejoicing and merry making comes for us too. Eid day begins with the morning prayer. We all rush to the mosques. What a congregation. Having performed our namaz, we visit the graves of our deceased. Then we sit at the breakfast table with the whole family with joy and happiness as if rewarding ourselves for having succeeded in completing a month of self-sacrifice.
Children put on their new dresses we bought for them. We the elderly visit our near and dear ones. There is a joyous mood in the air. Everyone salutes every one.
Sumptuos lunches and dinners are enjoyed together with relatives and friends at the same table. Women show their talent in preparing the most exquisite dishes and desserts.
Funfairs are opened. We take our children there though we adults also enjoy the attractions.
