Duke of Edinburgh's Award: DU Chapter

ONCE again all the awardees of Duke of Edinburgh's Award Programme from University of Dhaka (DU) headed towards the grand Senate Auditorium on 30 May, 2010 to attend the certificate giving ceremony. This time 52 students of DU achieved the award in the category of Bronze and Silver. Vice Chancellor of DU AAMS Arefin Siddique graced the occasion with his presence. Shah Imam Masud,Secretary of DEA Foundation and Shumon Saha, Country Director of DEA foundation, Bangladesh were also present in the function. The event was designed and coordinated by the awardees of DEA from DU under the close supervision of the authority. The cultural session of the event revealed the talents of the awardees.

Syed Tazim Haque, an awardee, shared his experience of DEA. The sensational violin and guitar playing turned the event into an exciting extravaganza. The event was concluded with the vote of thanks given by Prof. Shaheen Islam, Director, TSC, University of Dhaka

Youth Parliament Debate

ATN Bangla recently organised the BSB-Cambrian Parliamentary Debate on 11th June, Friday. Chairman of the Debate for Democracy Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron moderated the debate. A total of 18 debaters participated in the selection round of the debate titled "Youth Parliamentary Debate". Mashrura Mariam Chowdhury Oyshi of Shahid Bir Uttam Ltd. Anwar Girls College was the best debater in the individual category. Marisha Samiha Semonti of New Government Degree College, Rajshahi and Ismat Murshid Khan of Rajuk Uttara Model College were second. Babri Islam Tuli of Ideal College, Motijheel and Raihanul Amin of Cambrian College jointly secured third place. Noted cultural personality Asaduzzaman Noor , MP spoke as an observer discussant at the final round of the debate.

Opposition chief whip in the Jatiya Sangsad Zainul Abdin Farroque MP was present. Dr. Dil Rowshan Jinnat Ara Nazneen, Md Zahurul Alam NDC and Mahmud Al Faisal were the judges.

Freshers' reception at World University of Bangladesh

World University of Bangladesh organised a freshers' reception programme on June 08 at LGED Bhaban Auditorium. Md. Rezaul Karim Hira, the Minister of Land attended as the chief guest. The programme was also graced by Professor Dr. Pran Gopal Dutta, Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Chairperson of the Association of Bangladesh Universities and Professor Dr. M. Nurul Islam - a member of the syndicate of the World University of Bangladesh and the Vice Chancellor of the Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University. The event was chaired by Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury - a valiant Freedom fighter and Vice Chancellor of the World University of Bangladesh. As many as 1835 students admitted during the summer semester were accorded reception. Dr. Musfiq M. Choudhury, secretary of the board of governors and Morsheda Choudhury, Treasurer of the university also attended the programme. The reception was concluded with a musical soiree by the students of the university and invited artistes.

Murchona

THE Bengali word, 'Murchhona' means the state of being mesmerised or captivated. The meaning quite squares with 'MURCHHONA', the cultural organisation of BUET, as it has long been featuring captivating performances. This time, the organisation launched an inter-university cultural programme, a pioneering role in removing the cultural barrier between different universities. The elixir of melody and rhythm poured on the monotonous life-style, as if dribbles of rainwater was falling on dry soil. The three-day long programme kicked off on 9 June with Prof A F M Shafiulla, Vice-Chancellor of BUET, attending as the chief guest. He inaugurated the session through lighting candle while the song 'prothomo pradip jalo' (lighting the first candle) rendered by Ovipriyo. The first-day session mainly featured a number of indigenous songs of this region, rendered by 'Jalshiri', a cultural organisation of Jahangirnagar University. In the second day session, the cultural organisations, ECPA of East West University, NSSUS of North South University, BRAC University Club and Ahsan Ullah University of Science and Technology presented cultural programmes. The virtuoso performance by Mifta, a student of BRAC University held the audience captive and received standing ovation from the audience.

The final day session was for Murchhona and guest artistes. Notable Nazrul song artiste Bijon Mistri rendered a 'choturongo' performance. The last but the paramount performance was given by the master of Sarod, Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan accompanied by the percussionist, Zakir Hossain.

Freshmen welcomed at UNYSA,Bangladesh

United Nations of Youth and Student's Association, Bangladesh welcomed their new comers on 11th June 2010. The orientation programme was held at the faculty of business studies auditorium of University of Dhaka. The highest executives of the organisation greeted the new members heartily. Executive Vice President Sheikh Mohd Irfan Uddin and Vice President Zakir Hassan Titas made their credible speeches to begin the programme. They emphasised how this youth organisation strives to make a difference and take pride in making distinction in social position. The traditional ice- breaking segment as usual made everyone's day. A presentation on event management and previously attended Model United Nations (MUN) was shown. This year's award for best performance in activity went to Anika Binte Kasem, Aditya Zaman, Shadman Shahriar, Fayez Ahmed and Yasna Rahman.

A general meeting was held afterwards where upcoming events were discussed and it included campaigns on eve teasing, workshops, International Youth Leadership Summit and the first ever Bangladesh MUN. The day ended with strong commandments and fresh plans which only waits on it success.

Seminar on Human Trafficking and Interactive Session about Legal Education is held at CU

Law is there to protect the humanity. But sometimes, mere operation of criminal justice system often victimises the victims of human trafficking. “It is the duty of every state to adopt proper legal framework to stop the human trafficking and should work together in international arena,” said Professor Dr. Yubaraj Sangroula, Director, Kathmandu School of Law (KSL), Nepal at an open discussion in the seminar on “Legal Framework on Repatriation and Rehabilitation of Victims of Trafficking in Bangladesh” at the Faculty of Law of the University of Chittagong (CU) on June 13. No doubt human trafficking is an important issue in South Asia, and this time along with Dr. Sangroula, Professor Md. Zakir Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Law, CU and Associate Professor Dr. Abdullah Al Faruque, Chairman, Department of Law, CU came up with a research paper which ultimately made the audience more aware about this social problem.

In the first part, Dr. Faruque presented the paper jointly prepared with Professor Hossain as a part of University Grant Commission (UGC) sponsored project. In his speech, Dr. Faruque said that trafficking is not only a “law and order situation”, it is a social problem or human rights issue. The problem of trafficking is deeply rooted in social, legal and economic structures of a state that influences vulnerability of people to be trafficked from their home countries. The most affected ones are the women and children. The remedy of this problem can be the repatriation and the rehabilitation of the victims. But the absence of proper legal framework in different countries has made it tough to performs such tasks. Moreover, being an issue of international law and politics, there are disputes between the countries regarding the recognition of this problem as a violation of human rights. So, there should be a proper legal framework in every country along with social and economic measures to combat human trafficking. The paper also contained some case studies to discuss about the reason behind the problem, process to legal framework, remedies of the human trafficking etc.

In the second part, invited guests, teachers and students took part in an open discussion. Prof. Dr. Abu Yusuf, Vice Chancellor and Professor Dr. Md. Alauddin, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Chittagong attended the programme as the chief guest and special guest respectively. Professor Sadaf Noor, Advocate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Professor Md. Morshed Mahmud Khan were among the special guests. Professor Dr. Sangroula was present as the Guest of Honour.

Earlier, Dr. Sangroula took a session on “Learning to Make Our Knowledge Realistic, Pragmatic and Meaningful Service at All” on 12 June at the Department of Law, CU which was attended by the students. It was an informal discussion where he emphasised on the social engineering role of Law. He told lawyers stand as a bar between the court and the people because of their excessive loyalty to the court but less attention towards the people who are the source of law and it is ultimately for them. So, he inspired students to be skeptical to understand and develop the law scientifically in order to build up a social structure of law that ensures people's access to justice.
