Orientation Ceremony at PUB

THE Orientation Ceremony of the fresher students of 27th Batch, SBA, of The People's University of Bangladesh was held recently at the People's University Bangladesh (PUB). The Chairman of SBA department, Prof. Manik Kanti Mazumder presided over the programme. The chief guest of the event was Md. Shirajul Islam Mollah, Chairman, Board of Governors, PUB. Among others, faculty members and students attended the programme in large number.

3rd Anniversary of ASA University held

ASA University Bangladesh (ASAUB) observed its 3rd Founding Anniversary through a gala programme on May 31 at the ASA University Auditorium. The programme included a grand rally, inaugural ceremony, discussion, prize-giving ceremony, cultural programme and a fashion show.

Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman, University Grants Commission graced the Celebration meeting as the Chief Guest while Md. Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, President ASA & Chairman, Board of Governors, ASAUB, was present as the Special Guest. The programme was presided over by Prof. Md. Muinuddin Khan, Vice-Chancellor, ASA University Bangladesh and addressed among others by Mahbubul Alam, Editor, The Daily Independent, Prof. Dr. Tareq M.R. Chowdhury, Convener 3rd anniversary Steering Committee & Dean, Faculty of Law, Md. K halequzzaman, Registrar (In-charge) ASA University Bangladesh. Professor Nazrul Islam advised the students to be more attentive to their academic studies to face the challenge of 21st century and also to make them worthy citizens of the country.

Prof. Md. Muinuddin Khan emphasized building the habit of hard work, serious studies and moral values, so that they can be real assets of the nation.

The BOG-Members, Deans, Chairman of all departments, all teachers, administrative officers of ASAUB and students were present on the occasion.

Book launching on Adibashi weaving at IUB

THE Independent University, Bangladesh organised a launching ceremony of the book titled 'Strong Backs Magic Fingers' co-authored by Prof. Niaz Zaman and Manjulika Chakma at the Radius Center, Bay Galleria on May 29, 2010. H. E Dr Justin Lee, Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh attended the programme as Chief Guest. Among others, Prof. Syed Manzoorul Islam, Department of English, Dhaka University, Towhid Samad, Chairman, Governing Council, IUB, Prof. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Omar Rahman, Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Niaz Zaman, co-author of the book and Advisor, Department of English, IUB, spoke on the occasion. Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) is the co-publisher of the book.

`Strong Backs, Magic Fingers: Traditions of Backstrap Weaving in Bangladesh' provides an overview of blackstrap weavers and weaving in Bangladesh. It includes accounts of weaving by the Bawm, Chak, Chakma, Khyang, Khumi, Lushai, Marma, Mro, Pangkhoa, Tanchangya and Tripura, who dwell in the Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban regions of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, as well as of the Manipuri community who live in the northeast of Bangladesh. The programme was followed by an exhibition on blackstrap weavers and weaving in Bangladesh.

DIU and TAFE delegates meet Australian High Commissioner

A four member delegate comprising Daffodil International University and Technical and Further Education (TAFE), Australia made a courtesy visit with Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dr. Justin Lee at his office on May 25. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, Board of Governors, Daffodil International University led the delegates. The other members of the delegate were Mike Arthur, Managing Director of Ausina International Consultants Limited, Australia, Dr. Md. Fokhray Hossain, Registrar, Daffodil International University and Mohammad Nuruzzaman, Executive Director, Daffodil Institute of Information Technology (DIIT).

A delegation team led by Mike Arthur from TAFE proposed to work with the university to identify opportunities and determine the feasibility of delivering the courses under an arrangement in both countries. They appreciated the infrastructure, library and laboratory facilities, educational environment and showed keen interest to introduce TAFE Programme at Daffodil International University in Bangladesh.

Later they made a courtesy meet with Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dr. Justin Lee.

Seminar at IIUC on higher studies

THE department of Pharmacy, International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) organised a seminar on May 29 titled "Research and Review of opportunities in higher studies" at the departmental seminar hall room. Professor Dr. Saiful Islam, Faculty of Pharmacy, Dhaka University inaugurated the program and he gave the welcome speech. Professor Dr. Shohel Rana of Jahangirnagar University was present as the chief guest of the seminar.

The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. Mir Ezharul Hossain. All the lecturers and department head Mr. Akter Sayeed were present in the seminar. Senior lecturer of BRAC University Mr. S.M. Raquibul Hasan presented the main paper of the seminar.

ULAB Holds Freshers Orientation Summer 2010

UNIVERSITY of Liberal Arts Bangladesh organised a new kind of orientation for its Summer 2010 Freshers on May 23 at its Dhanmondi campus. Emphasising ULAB's mission of active learning, the orientation consisted of mixed media and video presentations about ULAB's mission, regulations, and facilities. These presentations were interspersed with games with prizes for the students.

The formal part of the ceremony was held later with the theme of "Truth." Vice Chancellor Professor Rafiqul Islam in his address asked the students to reach this truth through knowledge. Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Imran Rahman then welcomed the students and introduced the heads of each department. Vice President of the Board of Governors Dr. Kazi Anis Ahmed finally challenged the students to have personal initiative and to take advantage of all the facilities ULAB has to offer. A concert of a band consisting of ULAB students was held in the end of the programme for the entertainment of current and new students. Heads of Departments: Dr. Milan Kumar Bhattacharjee, Dr. Mohit Ul Alam, Dr. Jude Genilo, Dr. Sazzad Hossain, and Dr. A.H.M. Asadul Huq were present in the programme. The ULAB Registrar Mr. Khaled Khan and all the ULAB faculties were also in attendance.

GOVERNMENT Unani And Ayurvedic Medical College is providing BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and surgery) and BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and surgery) under direct supervision of University of Dhaka. Every year only 25 students can get admitted here after a tough competition in each discipline. For the degree every student needs to complete a 5-year course and 5 professional exams under the University of Dhaka. In order to complete the course, students are also required to complete an internship for 1 year. On 27 May, the institution organised a grand reception for the 21st batch including 2009-2010 session students. In this ceremony the Chief Guest was Freedom fighter Kamal Ahmed Mojumder, M.P. and it was presided over by the Principal Dr. Nurunnabi. All the teachers and students were present at the ceremony.

GULSHAN Free Primary School is a charity school for under-privileged children run by the members of Gulshan Ladies Club. The school is situated in an elite neighbourhood where about 350 needy children from the nearby areas, including slums, attend this school. Amazingly, the school had a 100% pass rate in the primary education terminal examination last year. The school is currently closed for summer vacation and is scheduled to reopen on 7th June. Standard Chartered Bank, Bangladesh has initiated a project to totally renovate the school before the children return from vacation. When they come back, they will in effect have a brand new school

Global Inequity as a Development Problem in Bangladesh

BRAC Development Institute (BDI) organised a talk titled “Global Inequity as a Development Problem in Bangladesh” by Dr. David Ludden, Professor of Political Economy and Globalization, Department of History, New York University, USA.

Synopsis of Dr. Ludden's presentation
“Inequitable social power relations are a development problem today because increasing economic inequality has become a serious problem in the world of globalization, for many reasons. Inequity is unique today because the market is the globally dominant institution of resource allocation, and markets, left alone, aggravate inequality. It appears that inequities of the market economy operating at various levels of spatial and temporal scale, ranging from the global to local, and from the distant past into the future are immutable facts, providing a permanent structure of natural conditions, within which economic development must occur, making the increase of inequality, with all its ills, inevitable. This appearance is very new, born in the 1990s. Its passive acceptance and active propagation are serious development problems, in Bangladesh and elsewhere.”

The talk was held at the Indoor Games Room of BRAC University, on 3 June.

This lecture is a part of the “BDI Lecture Series”, held on the first Thursday of every month, which aims to generate discussions and debate around the different dimensions of work that BDI is engaged with.

19th Academic Retreat of IUBAT

ON May 30 speakers at an academic retreat called for strengthening academic delivery system within an excellent teaching methodology for effecting appropriate learning process at the university. This was the essence of academic retreat of IUBAT International University of Business Agriculture and Technology arranged recently at Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Gazipur.

Professional teachers comprehensively dealt with both pedagogy and androgyny models of teaching and concluded by switching over to androgyny system judging its striking effects on the teaching process. They stressed on manpower development by way of capacity building of students for facilitating socio-economic development.

New graduates produced by universities are the products of long ranging effort, endurance and perseverance of the academics, said Prof. M. Alimullah Miyan, Vice Chancellor of IUBAT. He called upon the teachers to deeply involve in generation of knowledge.

The Chairs, Coordinators, Faculties and senior officials of management attended the programme reflecting the proceedings of last retreat, presentation by senior faculty members, and evaluation of on-going academic system and adoption of policy guidelines for harmonious relation between teachers and students.

Moderated by Tanvir H Dewan, Coordinator, College of Business, Selina Nargis, Director of Administration, presented methods of Communication. Dr. ASA Masud, Coordinator, College of Nursing, spoke on healthy lifestyle and Lutfor Rahman, Faculty, College of Business, spoke on self-governance for successful teaching environment. The programme was followed by a interactive discussion, analyses and recommendation for translating the theme of the retreat 'An Environment Designed for Learning' into reality.
