Life under an Angel's wing

Farah and Fariha Khandaker

MAKING something beautiful takes effort. It takes time to find just the right materials, then putting them all together. Still, some might still find flaws in what others would deem as a masterpiece. But amazingly there are certain things in this world that is beautiful without effort, without flaw, without prejudice. I bear witness to a wonder as such; a person who is the sheer epitome of benevolence and warmth.

Too high a praise you might wonder? Actually, it's more of an understatement to be precise. What do you call someone who is willing to put forth the happiness of others before that of her own? Giving endless effort to comfort those in need... a shade that would shelter and heal any wound. I do not quite remember my first memory of her. But then again, there are too many memories of her, which makes it a blessing to have her so close.

People write novels about heroes who accomplished feats that ordinary humans never can. Well, what we forget is that they are usually fiction, where as in reality we give little credit to the heroes who watch over us every day. Most of us have one. A woman whose unconditional love inspires you to make something of yourself. Those open arms that embrace you and give you hope in the darkest of times. You must have figured out who I'm talking about by now... the quintessential definition of the Maker's finest creation... my Mother.

Then again, she is not just my mother by birthright, but my mentor, my best friend and my motivation in life. I could wish the world for her, and it still wouldn't be enough. Her self-sacrifices to raise her daughters, to take care of her husband and the entire family is a feat that I highly doubt that if even a few can pull off. Her contagious optimism is one to be envious of. But overall, her beauty, leaves her competition way far behind.

Here in this short span of life that we are given, I feel blessed just at the thought that no matter where I am, whatever happens, there is someone there to love me and support me; someone who will look past beyond all my shenanigans and know me for who I am. And the fun part, you might be thinking, 'My mom's just as cool'. Well, I will be a four year old here and say, “My Mommy is the best!” and there is no doubt in it.

P.S. Happy Birthday Mom. we love you.
