Nurturing local talents in the telecommunication sector

Tanzina Rahman

The growing telecommunication sector in Bangladesh needs individuals who have adequate expertise in the field to boost the industry. Instead of outsourcing services abroad, utilizing our local talents will take this industry further and will create better employment opportunities for many.

LM Ericsson Bangladesh Limited (EBL), world-leading provider of telecommunications equipment and related services to mobile and fixed network operators, has taken such initiative to provide telecommunication technology related training to the undergraduate students of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). EBL recently signed an agreement with BUET where around 100 students were taken for the training.

The programme offered a thorough telecom related experience to the students who were able to relate theoretical aspects from their learning with practical issues. Internal Trainers of Ericsson exposed the students with different components of telecom such as the GSM System, the Axe System, the GPRS System and the WCDMA Overview/ Third Generation Telephony (3G).

EBL started this training programme with BUET, as this institute has been the pioneer in technical education since its inception. EBL's officials have affirmed that the company has future plans to take this programme further with other technical institutes of Bangladesh.

As part of EBL's Corporate Social Responsibility, the company has been previously engaged in donating winter clothing for SIDR victims, sponsoring events to help Acid survivors in the country, and distributing tree saplings among universities.
