Orientation Programme of BSDI Freshers
An orientation programme for the fresher students of the Diploma Engineering Programme in Computer, Telecommunication, Civil and Electrical for the Academic Year 2009-2010 was held at the Daffodil International Auditorium on 5 November. The programme was held in the presence of students, guardians, management and faculty staffs. Chairman of Bangladesh Skill Development Institute & Daffodil Group Md. Sabur Khan chaired the event, while Chairman of Bangladesh Technical Education Board Professor Md Abul Kashem was the chief guest. Principal of BSDI Mohammad Nuruzzaman, Academic Advisor of BSDI and ex- Principal of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute Azharul Islam, and Deputy Director of the Institute KM Hasan Ripon gave speeches at the programme. The daylong programme came to an end with a cultural event by BSDI students.
Blood Donation Programme at East West University
A daylong blood donation programme for the Fall Semester 2009 was held on 26 October 2009 at the ground floor of the Foundation Building of East West University. The programme was organised by the Medical Center of East West University in association with the Bangladesh Thalassaemia Hospital, Dhaka. Jalaluddin Ahmed, President, Board of Directors inaugurated the event. Students of East West University donated blood voluntarily for the Thalassaemia Patients.
The event was aimed at raising public awareness about the need for regular blood donations, encouraging new and re-energizing current donors, and helping reduce blood crises of the country. Students, faculty members and staffs, all came forward to donate blood to help save the lives of hundreds in need of it.
BBC Janala opens in Sheraton

BBC World Service Trust inaugurated their BBC Janala program at Sheraton in Dhaka City on 12 November 2009. Speakers at the program included representatives from the Ministry of Education, BBC World Service Trust, DFID, and the telecommunication companies. The BBC Janala project is a part of English in Action (EIA), a nine-year educational initiative, funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) aimed at improving language skills of 25 million people in Bangladesh by 2017.
BBC Janala will provide mass education using modern telecommunication devices; it offers 250 audio lessons and SMS quizzes to the country's growing over 50 million users of the six major mobile operators. The learning contents will also be available free at http://www.bbcjanala.com/. Allan Freedman, Country Director of the BBC World Service Trust, explained the project is a natural formulation of the input they got from their researches: "Younger People told the BBC that they would like to learn English and want our help. Janala will meet their demand by offering lessons on your mobile and the internet, making it easier and more interesting to learn English than ever before."
Reception Ceremony of Batch 18 at IBA, JU

The reception ceremony of the fresher students of the 18th batch of IBA, JU was held on 29 October at the university campus. The event was organised by the 17th batch and supported by the Students' Association of IBA, JU. Honorable Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Prof. Shariff Enamul Kabir was the chief guest of the programme while Dean of Social Science Faculty Prof. Sheikh Md. Monjurul Haq was the special guest. Director of IBA, JU, Dr. Mohammad Baktiar Rana was also present on the occasion. Speakers of the programme congratulated the new members. They also emphasized on the quality education that the institute provides. A lively multimedia presentation illustrating the activities of IBA, JU was shown during this session. A cultural session featuring group performances, solo performances, music videos, dramas and many other items followed the earlier session. The event was immensely enjoyed by the new students, who are now an integral part of the IBA, JU family.
Orientation of NUB MPH Students
The Orientation Ceremony of Fall Semester 2009 of Master of Public Health of the Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) was held at the Campus Auditorium in Rajshahi on 31 October. Professor M. Nazrul Islam, Principal, Islami Bank Medical College Hospital, Rajshahi was the Chief Guest while M. Abu Bakar Siddique chaired the event. Professor Gias Uddin Ahsan Adviser, Dept. of Public Health, Professor Rafiqul Islam, Head, Dept. Community Medicine, Islami Bank Medical College Hospital, Dr. Zia Mamoon, Head, Dept. of Public Health spoke as special guests on the occasion. Professor AFM Mohsin, In-charge, Dept. of Law, Professor Foyez Uddin, Advisor, Dept. of Law, Professor Afrauzzaman Chowdhury Khan, Advisor, Dept. of Business Administration, andProfessor Md. Jahurul Islam, Advisor, Dept. of English were present at the event.
Professor Dr. M. Nazrul Islam talked about the necessity of welcoming initiatives of the private sector in the health care and medical services sector. M. Abu Bakar Siddique emphasized on the need for high standard of public health education with practical training to health professionals in the country. Professor Dr. Gias Uddin Ahsan stated that the spread of MPH education will improve the quality of health care and reduce costs. Md. Anwarul Kamal Chowdhury, BBA & MBA Coordinator, Md. Ruhul Amin, Sr. Assistant Director, faculty members and officers also attended the orientation program.
ULAB organized 'Spirit of Life'
The University of Liberal Arts (ULAB) organized a Student Photo Exhibition called "Spirit of Life" recently. The exhibition was the part of a contest to showcase current ULAB student photographic talent as well as encourage new photographers to engage in creative initiatives. The theme of the exhibition was "Spirit of Life". By photographing life in all its forms, the students engaged with life in a profound way. To this end, this event encouraged students to explore their creative sides while increasing their technical skills, confidence and portfolios. The Special Judge of the contest was the renowned Bangladeshi photojournalist and Vice Principal of Pathsala, Abir Abdullah.
Sylhet Agricultural University Observes Third Founding Anniversary

The 3rd founding anniversary of Sylhet Agricultural University(SAU)was observed recently amidst a festive manner.
The daylong programme began through hoisting of the national flag by Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Abdul Awal at the varsity campus in the morning. Other features of the daylong programme included a colourful procession, blood donation, tree plantation, releasing fish fries, discussion meeting and a cultural function. Teachers, students and employees joined the procession and other programmes.
Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) is the country's 4th agricultural university and the 28th public university, located on about 50 acres of land about 5 kilometres away from the Sylhet city.
Founding Anniversary of Daily Prothom Alo
held at Dhaka Imperial College
The 11th founding anniversary of Daily Prothom Alo was held at the campus of Dhaka Imperial College on 5 November. The event was organised by 'Bondhushobha' of Imperial College. At 11:00 a.m. the Vice Chancellor of the college Mahfuzul Haque and the Departmental Secretary of 'Bondhushobha' Saiduzzaman Rowshan inaugurated the programme by lighting mangal prodip. In his welcome speech Vice Chancellor Mahfuzul Haque expressed the desire to be involved with further humanitarian activities with Prothom Alo in the future. Among others, Anil Chandra Nath, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Department, Dr. Selina Jasmine, Assistant Professor of Bangla Department and Shamim Ahsan from the English Department also gave speeches.In the second phase of the programme members of Nandan Kanon, a cultural club from Imperial College talked about change through poetry recitation and song and dance performances. The entire event was facilitated from the beginning to end by Md. Morshed Alam.
