Independence Day observed at BAU

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) celebrated the National Independence Day in a befitting manner on 26 March. Paying tributes to the memory of martyred freedom fighters during the liberation war in 1971, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. A. Sattar Mandal placed floral wreaths along with teachers, students, officers, employees and various socio-cultural organizations at the Muktijuddah Smriti Stambha (Liberation War Memorial) of BAU. The days program included a formal march organized by the BAU Shishu Kishore Council and participated by Ekata Sangha, Kakali Sangha, Nabarun Sangha, Dhumkeu Club, Sabuj Mela, K.B. High School, K.B.College, Shishu Niketan, Muktijoddah Smriti Biddalya, K.B. Govt. Primary School, Purbasha Club, Girls Guide, Scouts, BNCC and Security Section. BAU Teachers' Association, Officers Association, different Halls of residence, Sonali Dal, Ganatantrik Shikhak Forum, University Club, Ladies Club, BAU Employees Association, Mujktyijoddah Sangsad and other different socio-cultural organizations chalked out elaborate programs separately to observe the day. Special prayers were also offered for the salvation of the martyred souls of liberation war.

Centenary of the birth of Dr. Aboul Fara Mohammed

April 1 was the centenary of the birth of Dr. Aboul Fara Mohammed Khalil-ur-Rahman. Dr. Aboul was born on what was then Calcutta India in an undivided Bengal on 1st April 1909. He graduated from Islamia College Calcutta in 1928. After graduating from Presidency College Calcutta he completed his PhD from London University, the School of African and Oriental Studies. His outstanding academic credentials and personal charms received ready recognition at the hands of the Govt. of Bangladesh by his appointment as Professor of History in the Bengal Educational Service at Presidency College Calcutta. In 1952 he was invited to join UNESCO in Paris, France. In 1960 he was the founder Director for UNESCO Regional Office in South-East Asia in Bangkok. Unfortunately, at the age of 54 he succumbed to a heart attack, while at a conference in UNESCO Paris and passed away at the American Hospital in Paris.

Seminar on Bangladesh RMG Industry held at IBA

On Sunday, March 29, a one-hour seminar on the 'Impact of Global Recession on the RMG sector of Bangladesh” took place in the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka. Mr. Ghassan Arab, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Multiline Textil GmbH, was the chief speaker on this occasion. Mr. Arab said that Bangladesh needs to concentrate on its garment sector to “tackle the financial crisis”. He also pointed out that the availability of water and trained manpower makes the ready-made garment industry of Bangladesh very competitive. However, the industry needs a lower lead time (of 60 days), better management and advanced technology to compete with Eastern European countries. Mr. Junaid Ahmed Palok, the youngest Member of the Parliament, was also present at the seminar.

SEU honours Freedom Fighters

Southeast University (SEU) honoured four freedom fighters by providing them financial assistance at a programme to mark the 38th Independence Day.

At the programme arranged by the students and teachers on the university campus on March 29, the university gave Tk 40 thousand each to the poor freedom fighters. Jobed Ali from Dinajpur, Kanchon Mala from Munshiganj, Azizur Rahman from Jhenidah and Abdus Sattar Haulader from Pirojpur.

Former army chief Lt Gen (retd) Harun-ar-Rashid, SEU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr M Shamsher Ali, Pro VC Prof Abu Ahmed, School of Business Studies Dean Prof Dr Sayed Masud Hossain and Department of Business Administration Chairman Dr Helal Uddin Ahmed also addressed the programme.

NSUCDC organizes Cine Week

North South University Cine and Drama Club (NSUCDC) successfully held the closing ceremony of cine week on 24 March. Film director Tareque Masud was the special guest at the event. Faculty advisor of NSUCDC Abdus Salim also attended the ceremony. Senior club member M Didarul Alom Boby made a presentation of the 12 years of history of NSUCDC at the beginning of the programme.

The movies shown during the cine week were City of God, The Bicycle Thief, Life is Beautiful, Ontorjatra, Forrest Gump, Pother Panchaly, Roman Holiday, The Diving Bell & The butterfly and Closer. Those who attended the workshops on theatre and film direction were given certificates.

BRAC Bank Road Show at BRACU

The BRAC Bank Road Show was held at the Indoor Games Room, BRACU on 18 March. Career Services organized the BRAC Bank Road Show for MTO recruitment at the BRAC Bank. Pro-VC of BRACU, Faculty members and Admin members were present at the event. Ms. Tahniyat Ahmed Karim and 30 current MTOs conducted the show. A number of about 120 participants were present at the occasion. The Road Show highlighted the future prospects of the candidates and the issues involved in the recruitment process. The event wrapped up with a question-and-answer session. The Head of HR, BRAC Bank and her team answered the inquiries of the students.
