Seminar on Advanced Engineering Management at KUET

A seminar on “Advanced Engineering Management: An Industrial Engineering Approach” organized by the Industrial Engineering & Management (IEM) Association was held on 2 December at the seminar hall of IEM department, KUET. Honorable V. C Prof. Dr. Nowser Ali Morol spoke on the occasion as chief guest while the function was presided over by Prof. Dr. Kutub Uddin, Head, Dept of IEM, who was also the keynote speaker of the session. Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Dean, Faculty Of Mechanical Engineering and Engg. A.K.M Mahbubuzzaman, Senior Executive Director, Meghna Cement Mill Ltd. were present as special guests. Prof. Dr. Kutub Uddin gave two presentations titled "Introducing Industrial Engineering & Department of IEM" and “Operation Management & Operation Research.” Presentations featuring “Supply Chain network”, “Quality Management” and “Project Management” were also delivered by MD. Marufuzzaman, Badrul Ahsan and Azizur Rahman respectively. There was a question & answer and feedback session. Senior teachers, high officials from different industries, ex-students, lecturers of KUET and students were present in the seminar.


Crossings: ULAB Journal of English studies

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) has recently published the first volume of a critical journal on literary and socio-political issues from the Department of English and Humanities (DEH) entitled Crossings: ULAB Journal of English Studies, Vol 1, No. 1, Fall 2008. It is an annual peer-reviewed journal of scholarly articles and book reviews. Edited by Professor Mohit Ul Alam, PhD and Head of DEH, the journal has eighteen articles and one book review section. These articles can be divided into three thematic concerns. One group deals with the application of English language in our educational institutes. They explore the problems of applying English language in our educational institutes and suggest solutions. The second group of essays is written from feminist perspectives, while the third group consists of independent reading of some scattered texts.

Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, Professor Kaiser Huq, Professor Fakrul Alam, from the Department of English, University of Dhaka, and Professor Mohit Ul Alam and Dr. Kazi Anis Ahmed, from DEH, ULAB, and Dr. Arran Stibbe, Associate Professor, Humanities Department, University of Gloucestershire, U. K. are among the notable contributors whose essays embrace interfacing themes and justify the title of the journal.


A seminar at ADUST

A seminar on"Global financial crisis and International Business Strategies for Bangladesh" was organized by School of Business and Economics, Atish Dipanakar University of Science and Technology (ADUST) on 3rd Decmber , 2008. The seminar was presided over by Prof. Dr. Abul Hossain Sikder, PRO-VC of ADUST while chief guest was Dr. Shoheb Ahmed, Former Adviser, Caretaker Govt.,Ministry of Finance, Planning, Commerce and T&T. The keynote paper was presented by Prof. Dr.A.K. Monawar Uddin Ahmed, Dept. of Economics, University of Dhaka and designated discussant was prof. Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Chairman, School of Business and Economics, ADUST.

Special guests were Prof. Dr. Mahmood Osman Imam, Chairman, Dept. of Finance, University of Dhaka and Habibullah Bahar, Economic Adviser, Bangladesh Bank.

In the seminar speakers argued that Govt. should take long-term strategies for creating employment opportunities. They stressed that investment friendly atmosphere should be created.


RU Psychology dept. Celebrates golden jubilee

The Psychology department of Rajshahi University celebrated two-day long golden jubilee recently. Former chief justice and chief adviser of the caretaker government Justice Habibur Rahman inaugurated the programme at Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium of the university. On the occasion, the department organized a two-day long programme to celebrate the golden jubilee with enthusiasm and festivity.

Former chairman of Psychology Department, Dhaka University Prof Rawson Ali, , Psychologist Dr M.A. Rashid, former RU Vice Chancellor and Psychology department chairman Prof Dr Muslim Huda, Prof Manzur Ahmed, Prof Dr Tarik Saiful Islam, RU Vice Chancellor Prof Mamnunul Keramat and 552 former and present students jointly took part in the inauguration rally.

After the inauguration rally, the department held a seminar on "Human Resource Development: A prerequisite for Development in Bangladesh" at Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium.

Chairman of the dept Prof Muhammad Nurullah chaired the programme. The programme included colorful rallies, subjective lectures delivered by renowned psychologists, photo session, exhibition, memory discussion and an attractive cultural evening.


DIU newsletter published

The second issue of the newsletter of Daffodil International University (DIU) has been published recently. It features many important events including DIU's second convocation, Sixth founding anniversary, Business festival 2008 and the launching of three departments -- Law, Journalism and Mass Communication, and Real Estate. It also covers 'Intellectual Discourse' jointly organised by DIU and the Daily Star; 'Say no to drug programme' jointly organised by DIU and the daily Prothom Alo and 'Campaign for Cox's Bazar and Sundarban' jointly organised by DIU and the daily Samakal. It features many other interesting items. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Aminul Islam formally accepted the copy of the newsletter at his office from the publisher Prof. Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Registrar of DIU, and the newsletter committee that included Convenor Mr. Mohammad Sahid Ullah, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, and Co-convenor Dr. Binoy Barman, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of English.


Seminar on AIDS at SEU

Southeast university (SEU) organized a Rally and a Seminar on ‘HIV/AIDS’ on December 1, at the seminar hall of the university. Prof Dr. M Shamsher Ali, Vice Chancellor, Southeast University was present as the chief guest and Prof Abu Ahmed, Pro Vice Chancellor of SEU attended as the special guest at the programme. Prof Dr Sayed Masud Hossain, Dean, School of Business Studies, and Dr. Helal Uddin Ahmed, Chairman, Department of Business Administration, also addressed the seminar. There was an Essay Competition at the end of the seminar.


BAU ceremony for internet services

Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), addressed the inaugural session of a workshop titled "Internet Extension and Management" at BAU library on 19 October. Presided over by Prof. Dr. Bahadur Miah, President of Internet Extension and Management Committee at BAU, the inaugural session was also addressed by Director of Graduate Training Institute at BAU Prof. Dr. M Mozahar Ali, Deputy Director (Planning and Development) Dr. Md. Robiul Islam and others.


Pharmacy Freshers Reception at Primeasia University

The department of Pharmacy of Primeasia University organized a freshers' reception program for the 13th Batch students (Fall Semester 2008) on 10th November 2008 at the university premises. The yearning verse of the program was “Good Health Care for the People through Good Pharmacy Practices”.

Prof. Dr. Gias Uddin Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of Primeasia University, attended the program as chief guest while Prof. Dr. ANM Meshquat Uddin, Pro Vice Chancellor of the university was the special guest. Prof. Sk. Feroz Uddin Ahmed, Head, department of Pharmacy presided over the function. Among others Mr. Abul Kashem Molla, Registrar of Primeasia University, Prof. Zahid Uddin Mahmud Khan, Head, department of Microbiology, PAU, Prof. Dr. AJM Omar Faruque, Head, department of Biochemistry, Prof. Dr. Salahuddin Ahmad, Head, department of Business Administration, Mr. Azharul Haque, Head, department of ETCE & CSE, Mr. Sk. Md. Hasanuzzaman, Controller of Examinations were also present as guests of honor in the program. The speakers stressed that the practicing Pharmacists have to uphold their professional ethical and moral attitudes in their jobs. About 200 students and faculty members were present in the program. After the program, the students of the department of Pharmacy staged an enjoyable cultural program, Prof. Sk. Feroz Uddin


Seminar on Liberation War of Bangladesh at BRACU

For a nation to have an identity one needs to know its history, more so, this is especially true for a nation like ours where today's young people know very little about the history of the Liberation War of 1971. With this in mind, the Centre for Languages (CfL), BRAC University, organized a Seminar on the Liberation War of Bangladesh on the 17th of November 2008.

The guest speakers recollected their heroic accounts of the 9-month struggle in 1971. They included Major General Helal Morshed Khan Bir Bikram psc (Retd), Mr Sahidullah Khan Badal, Lt. Col. Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir Bir Pratik (Retd ), Major Qamrul Hasan Bhuiyan (Retd), and Major Taher Ahmed Bir Pratik (Retd.). The speakers talked about the prelude to the War and the organizational and military developments during the uprising, which was followed by a video footage of Bangladesh's history in days before the war up to the surrender of the Pakistan Army at Dhaka Race Course on 16th December 1971. However, it was not only the military who participated in the struggle, but the common mass also took part in it. Another part of the seminar was devoted to the real-life stories of the masses. This part of the seminar was entitled Muktijuddhe Jana Manusher Bhumika and was narrated by Major Qamrul Hasan Bhuiyan (Retd), who is the Chairman and Chief Researcher of Center For Bangladesh Liberation War Studies. Maj. Gen. Morshed illustrated through maps his strategies and how he advanced. Col. Sajad told about his thrilling and adventurous story of joining the Liberation War from the western front of the India- Pakistan border. All speakers captivated the audience which comprised of BRAC University students and faculty members.
