BAU holds inaugural ceremony for internet services

Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), addressed the inaugural session of a workshop titled "Internet Extension and Management" at BAU library on 19 October. Presided over by Prof. Dr. Bahadur Miah, President of Internet Extension and Management Committee at BAU, the inaugural session was also addressed by Director of Graduate Training Institute at BAU Prof. Dr. M Mozahar Ali, Deputy Director (Planning and Development) Dr. Md. Robiul Islam and others. A large number of students, teachers and employees of BAU were present during the inaugural ceremony. Facilities of Internet services through fiber optics at all the faculties and departments of BAU will be available from December this year.


St. Joseph's old boys hold annual reunion

The students of Saint Joseph High School are known as “The Josephites”. Saint Joseph High School is indisputably one of the topmost secondary schools in the country, in terms of the quality of education and success records in public examinations, discipline, practice of leadership, sports and co-curricular activities. Many of the graduates from the school are established leaders and notable personalities of the country in various fields.

The alumni of the school had formed the Saint Joseph Old Boys Association (SJOBA). SJOBA has now officially been registered as a Foundation and is known as Saint Joseph Old Boys' Foundation, SJOBF. SJOBF is registered as a non-profit organization with international chapters in Canada and U.S.A. Over 5,600 Josephites are present in 7 countries of the world. The Aim of SJOBF is to “Build Global Fraternity Network” and “Create a socially responsible organization”. Presently, Mr. Z.J.A.S. Siddique is the President and Mr. Latiful Bari is the General Secretary and CEO of SJOBF.

SJOBF has organized numerous events and programmes and continues to do so both within and outside the school premises. As part of their Annual Get Together, this year, SJOBF organized their re-union at the Winter Garden, Dhaka Sheraton Hotel on the night of October 16. Each year, a theme is chosen for such get togethers and this year the theme chosen was “Fire & Ice”. To match the theme, the venue was aesthetically decorated with the ambience of “Fire & Ice”. Renowned musical band, Pentagon played all night to the delight of the Josephites and invited guests at the programme. The event also displayed a Laser Show which briefly encapsuled the SJOBF aim and reach of the organization.

The event was a success and greatly enjoyed by the SJOBF members and guests alike. For many it was a get together after a long span of time and they mingled with each other rekindling old memories and walking down the memory lane in a nostalgic mood. The event witnessed many notable personalities of the country and the corporate world, who outside their professional domain got time to relax and enjoy the companionship of old friends and acquaintances by letting their hair down for the night.

The event was sponsored by the countries' leading corporate houses like Standard Chartered, RC Cola of Partex Group, BRAC Bank, Ispahani, Meena Bazar and KKT of Gemcon Group, Bangla Cat, Transtec of Transcom Group and Confidence Group.


49th Orientation Program at IUBAT

International University of Business Agriculture and Technology celebrated the 49th Orientation Program of the university on 20 October. Speakers on the occasion laid down importance on human resource development and advised the fresh-students to adapt with changes to properly face challenges in practical life for contributing to socio-economic growth and development.

Prof. M. Alimullah Miyan, Vice Chancellor and Founder of IUBAT, spoke on the occasion.

The 49th Orientation Program was held at the University Campus, Uttara Model Town, Dhaka. The program was participated by freshmen along with their guardians, Members of the Board of Governors, elites from the Uttara community, faculty members, alumni, senior students, and personnel of the university.

Earlier, Deirdre Evans, Adjunct Professor from Vancouver Community Mental Health Services, British Columbia, Canada spoke as the Guest of Honor. Earlier freshmen from different parts of the country and members of faculty introduced themselves.

The function started with the national anthem and a welcome speech. This was followed by alumni speeches and distribution of certificates of IUBAT Merit Excellence. The event ended with the vote of thanks by Mrs. Selina Nargis, Director of administration and a cultural event.


International fame for SDF

Stamford Debate Forum (SDF) has successfully reached the "break" in the second stage in any international debate championship. Sri Venkateswara College English Debating Society of India organised South Asian Parliamentary Debating Championship named Rhetoric 2008 from 9th to 13th October, 2008. Stamford Debate Forum (SDF) sent one team consisting Tanvir Hafiz, Mohammad Monir Hossain and Md. Imran Khan with Abdullah Mohammad Shukrana as an adjudicator. In total, 48 teams from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have participated in this Championship. From Bangladesh IBA and North South University also participated in the event. In the Championship, there were 7 debates in Preliminary round. SDF debated very well in the Preliminary round. SDF won debates against Amity College team A and Team B, LSR Institute, Joharlal Medical College, JVCE Institute. SDF was placed 12th among 48 teams in the Preliminary round and reached second stage named Round 16. In Round 16 SDF faced IBA and lost the debate in split result. This is the first time SDF has break and reached second stage of an International Debate Championship. SDF was able to make a positive impact in an international arena and received a sound appreciation from other international teams.

RU Physics dept. Celebrates 50 years

The Physics Department of Rajshahi University organized a two-day long Golden Jubilee celebration with the slogan 'Moving ahead with Physics' on Oct. 16.

Convener of golden jubilee celebration and former Vice Chancellor of International Islamic university, Chittagong Prof. A K M Azharul Islam gave the welcome speech at the inaugural session while Chairman of the department Prof. M Wabidul Hakim was present at the chair on the first day.

The golden jubilee celebration included a colourful rally, scientific lecture delivered by renowned physicists, science exhibition, reminiscence and an attractive cultural evening.

At the inauguration ceremony, renowned Scientist and Former Vice Chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Prof. S.A. Chowdhury attended on the program as the chief guest while Vice Chancellor of RU Prof. Mamnunul Keramat was present as special guest.
