All Asian Inter-Varsity Debating Contest concludes

National Law School (NLS)-B1 team of Bangalore, India, emerged as. The champion while NLS-B3 team was the runner-up at the 15th All AsianInter-Varsity Debating Championship 2008 that ended in the Dhaka on13th May 2008 evening. Rahul Talwar of Symbiosis Law Collegeof Pune won the best public speaker award.

Education and Commerce Adviser Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman gave away the awards as the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony of the week-long event, organised and hosted by North South University (NSU), at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre. Dr.

Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi, NSU Vice-chancellor, chaired the event. NSU. Foundation Chairperson, Mrs. Rehana Rahman, was present as special guest. Some 450 students from 38 institutions and 12 Asian countries participated in this largest and the most prestigious debate contest in Asia. NSU received generous support and assistance from various sponsors and media partners to organize the seminal event.

NSU Debate Club Faculty Adviser Nusrat Sharmin Huq and Tournament Director Afreen Hossain Barsa also spoke at the closing ceremony. Foreign and local participants, NSU Foundation members, faculty, officers, students, elites of the society were present at the event. The debating championship was organised in collaboration with Prime Bank Ltd, Southeast Bank Ltd, NCC Bank Ltd, Brac Bank Ltd, Rahimafrooz, Citibank NA, International Organization for Migration, ACI Ltd, Mojo, Computer Source Ltd, ATN Bangla, The Daily Star, Prothom Alo, Radio Foorti, Masthead PR, United International University, St Joseph Higher Secondary School and College, Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Farzana Shakil Makeover Salon Ltd.

Counseling at Bangladesh International School

Apollo Hospitals Dhaka recently organised Health and Mental Care Counseling on Adolescent issues at Bangadesh International School (BIS) on behavioral patterns of the students, emotional crisis, physical changes and relationship with teachers/parents/peers.

At the program, knowledge and guidelines was disseminated on how to handle the adolescent issues on daily school activities to the section heads and student affair teachers. In addition, the program was aimed to raise the awareness level of adolescent healthcare issues to ensure the proper upbringing of the adolescents of our society.

Counselor Ms. Farhat Hasan of Apollo Hospitals Dhaka conducted the Program.

DUMC at BBC Bangladesh Sanglap

Students of Department of Management Studies, University of Dhaka, are not only concerned about their grades in the exam, but they are also concerned about their motherland, Bangladesh. The proof was there in their active participation in a BBC Bangladesh Sanglap. On the initiative of Dhaka University Management Club (DUMC), a group of eight male and female students participated in the BBC Bangladesh Sanglap held at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center, Dhaka on 10th May 2008.

General Moinul Hossain Chowdhury - formar Caretaker Government Adviser and retired Major General of Bangladesh Army, Mahmudur Rahman- formar adviser to the Energy Ministry during the BNP led coalition governemtn, Dr. Hasan Mahmud Environment Affairs Secretary of Awami League and Dr. Mahbuba Nasrin, Professor of Sociology, Dhaka University were the panel members of the program.


Excavation of Bijoy Sagar at RU begins

The Rajshahi University (RU) authorities have started excavation of Bijoy Sagar, a large canal on the campus, to increase the natural beauty of the university. The vice-chancellor of the university, M Altaf Hossain, inaugurated the excavation work of the canal recently. After completion of the excavation, the canal will work as water reservoir which will help ease water crisis at student halls and residences on the campus. The canal on 16 acres of land is situated between Shaheed Samsuzzoha Hall and the mass grave at the university.

Freshers' reception at University of Asia Pacific

The newly admitted students in Spring 08 semester of the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) were accorded a reception on 30 April 08 in the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall of the National Museum, Shahbagh, Dhaka. More than 600 students got admitted to eight departments of the university in graduate and undergraduate courses. Prof. Nazrul Islam, Chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh was the Chief Guest on the occasion while Mr. AA. Moniruzzaman, Acting-Chairman of the UAP Foundation was the Special Guest. The function was presided over by Prof. Dr. Abdul Matin Patwari, VC, UAP.

The function was also addressed by the Pro-VC, Treasurer and the Registrar. The function was rounded off with a colourful variety show organised by the students.
