ICT Fair at
Oxford International School

Fatema Jannat Mony,

and Ananya Kadir

THE weather might have been hot on the 24th of April but that was nothing compared to the frenzy that was taking place inside OIS. Mr. Manik Lal Samadder, special assistant to Chief Adviser was the chief guest, and as he cut the shiny red ribbon, the opening ceremony turned out to be a Pandora's box that eventually unleashed the digital monster that lay dormant in the very hearts of the students of Oxford. Thus began the 3rd Inter-School ICT Fair 2008.

In this three-day fair, IT skills were reinvented by the young minds of different school at Oxford. Digital paintings ran riot with the skills of the passionate young artists here, while the brilliant programmers of Sunbeams, Green Herald, Notre Dame College, ESS, Onnesha and OIS cooked up their own programs that awed the spectators. The students of OIS exposed their brilliance by the digital magazine, 'Oxford in a Nutshell', combining both information and entertainment. About 15 Bengali and English medium Schools (both from Dhaka and elsewhere) participated in this splendid event. On the second day, the school was thronging with visitors. A seminar on 'ICT in Education' was held along with software, multimedia presentation, database competition, quiz competition, website designing and digital paintings. An exclusive and colourful 'Art and Craft Exhibition' was praised by visitors of all ages. Various fun-filled events were arranged that included a film show and computer games for the young visitors. Various renowned companies exhibited their exclusive products with lucrative offers.

Eminent television Presenter Hanif Sangket and former football player Ashrafuddin Chunnu encouraged the participating students. The fair ended with a gorgeous prize-giving -ceremony followed by a cultural function. Barrister M. Haider Ali, Former Secretary, Ministry of Information and Technology attended as chief guest. Vice President of ASOCIO Abdullah H. Kafi and Mostafa Jabbar, President of Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) were present as special guests. President of Oxford International School Shakawat Hossain and Principal G.M. Nizam Uddin also spoke on the occasion.

In this three day competition Oxford International School secured top position followed by Green Herald. Notre Dame College achieved all the prizes in miscellaneous projects. The fair started with the promise, 'Towards a vibrant versatility' and kept its word throughout the fair and ended up with a promise of a digital future generation.

Erratum

Thank you Dr. Md. Sohrab Hossain Sarker for pointing out that the Star Campus (11May 2008) cover story's title “Celebrating 150 years of Sir Salimullah Medical College” was historically not correct. Actually it was “Mitford Hospital” which celebrated 150 years. Sir Salimullah Medical College started functioning in the year 1875, 17 years after the Hospital. Actually the Bangla signboard and the banner says Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, establised 1858. We sincerely regret the error.
