Let's Make a New Bangladesh
S. E. Karim Sabik
When I find my country still very backward after 36 years of its liberation I feel sorry and sometimes I blame our ancestors for the situation. It is obvious that our previous generations have failed to make our country a prosperous one. We deserve a better Bangladesh, without so much of criminal activities, corruption and widespread poverty. Yes, I believe that they failed but that is not the only thing I'm concerned about. I feel sad when I find my generation also following the footsteps of our forefathers. We're just like them; only difference is we are a bit modern, just a bit fashionable!
We, the young generation, are the people who need to take the responsibility to change our position in the global world. But we have to understand the facts better. It pains me to see how self-centred we have become. We are only concerned with having 'fun' and doing nothing constructive.
Do we really care how the majority of the people live in this country? No, we don't. All we care about is ourselves; we don't like to hear if other people are starving or not, we just like to feed ourselves. We go to various expensive restaurants and fast-food-chains to fill our stomach with junk food. Sometimes we often do more terrible things like spending a lot of money on costly beverages; smoking to the peril of our health something like, Shisha; then we take Yaba, Brown sugar etc., to get high!
All these are just wastage of our precious money and we know that! We wear funky t-shirts, jeans, sarees and fotuas that are worth thousands of taka whereas many people like us wear torn and dirty clothes, sometimes they even die if the weather is very cold! But we still don't care! We have become so inhuman. But we're the people who could play a vital role to change this situation.
We at least can minimize our extra needs and do something constructive to remove our problems. It's just like that we can stop talking over mobile phones all night long and think about something good at that time, like how to remove illiteracy from Bangladesh! We can concentrate on something creative without wasting our precious time. In addition, we can chat less on the Internet and pay more attention to gaining knowledge through it, as our education system is not sufficient to provide enough general knowledge.
It is just that I feel we need to change our attitude, we should acknowledge that the way we're leading our life is wrong or it is just not the best way. We should believe that we can build a new Bangladesh without poverty and hunger and crime. We should raise our voice against dishonest political leaders. We should concentrate more on our study and social activities than doing other stupid things we do. We must understand that our country needs more expert doctors, engineers and entrepreneurs, so we need to become one of them someday. We must do everything possible to make a new prosperous Bangladesh.
It is true that changing a country is not an easy task to accomplish but from my point of view it doesn't seem impossible. At least, let us change our attitude, let us believe that 'we can change the world', and let us do something for our country! Who knows, if we do so, may be within a few years we will find our Bangladesh standing proudly as a developed nation!
