LBA 104 My experience
Sabrina Hasan Shoily
I am a student of Business Administration and for me; life is all about Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Economics, and Management etc. During my fourth semester course advising, I selected a course called LBA 104. I wanted to enroll in that course ever since I read about it in the catalog, which I received during my admission. LBA stands for Liberal Arts, and LBA 104 is a course titled 'Introduction to Dramatics'. Acting, drama has always been my passion and to do a course on it without joining any of the activity clubs at NSU was fantastic news for me! At first, my parents were a bit taken aback and said things like: “Drama? BBA te natok keno korabe?” (Why would they make you act in BBA?) But I assured them that I would thoroughly enjoy the course (because I was sure I would); I would try my level best and manage to complete the course with an excellent grade. My experience of doing the course was really special and memorable.
On the first class, I realized that LBA would be very different from any course I had ever done. Our lecturer, Mr. Israfil Shaheen had a PhD in Drama from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and was a very capable person. He made us all feel at ease and promised that the course would be an enjoyable one.
We began by introducing ourselves and sharing one memorable incident of our life, it was done to make us free so that the shy ones in the class can gather the courage to stand in front of the whole class and perform and also be ready for all kinds of criticisms! LBA 104 was all about being spontaneous. While the first quarter of our course was theoretical, the rest of it was completely practical. The first midterm exam was written exam. The second midterm exam was to perform a 30 minutes drama. The entire section was divided into two groups and both the groups had the same topic for the drama. The brain storming sessions, endless works like developing scenes, writing dialogues, managing props and costumes, arranging background scores, hanging out at friends' places for planning and rehearsing…. was really great fun!
While other courses were more like torture sessions, LBA class seemed like a picnic everyday. There were no quizzes, no assignments. We used to move all the chairs in a corner of the classroom, open our shoes (well, everyone didn't really do that; but as I am more of the excited & chirpy one, I liked jumping around the class bare foot! No other course would allow me to do that!)
Our final exam was a bit different. Two people were supposed to form a group, establish a drama with two-three scenes and perform it. It reminded us of our class parties which we had when we were in school! Each one of us arrived with weird props and costumes. Some were successful in impressing the teacher and the classmates with their acting talents and witty dialogues while some had a lot more to learn. At the end, it was truly an extremely memorable course to do. Almost everyone in my class enjoyed it to the fullest. We made some amazing friends and memories that we will cherish forever.
So, all the students of NSU who did not have any idea that such a course exists, if you are interested in completing three credits of GED course with a lot of fun and excitement, if you are more of the extrovert, spontaneous kind of a person…then LBA 104 is the course for you to enroll in, trust me, you will not regret the decision!
As for me, my family was really happy with my LBA final grade, especially my grandmother! Yeah, can you believe it? I thought she wouldn't really appreciate the idea of me doing a drama course but apparently she was the most excited one in the family. Well, maybe I can use the knowledge that I have earned from my LBA 104 course to establish myself as a theatre and TV actress someday, what say?!
