In 2002 the Shanto-Mariam Foundation formed the Bangladesh Institute of Art, Design & Technology in order to provide Bangladesh students with alternative qualifications above HSC level. Subsequently in 2003 when the Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology was given Government approval the HND was incorporated into the undergraduate programmes giving Bangladesh students even greater educational flexibility. Edexcel International (UK) was the validating body chosen to provide and validate these programmes offered by the Shanto-Mariam Centre.
Edexcel International is a world famous UK supplier of secondary and tertiary education to other countries throughout the world. The qualifications awarded by Edexcel are recognised as being of the highest quality and are acceptable everywhere. BTEC (Business and Technical Education Council) is an awarding body for vocational qualifications, which merged with Edexcel in 1966. Quality is maintained by a rigorous system of oversight and moderation by teams of External Verifiers and Quality Auditors in each subject who visit each Centre to ensure strict adherence to laid down standards. This is in addition to the regular visits to Centres by UK and regional staff of Edexcel.
The photos here show an External Examiner in discussion with students about their project work.
The BTEC National Diploma (ND) is the equivalent of the UK A-level, and can be used to gain entry to the first year of study in many undergraduate programmes throughout the world. Failure at HSC or 'A' level is no longer a disaster and after 2 years and a satisfactory ND, undergraduate study in Art & Design is possible.
The BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) is regarded as being equivalent to the first two years' study of an undergraduate degree. Many universities in the UK, USA and now, Australia will give Higher National Diploma holders at Merit or Distinction level, advanced standing by allowing them to enter the final or third year of an equivalent degree programme.
Higher National qualifications are offered in nine major disciplines and can be completed through approved centres of Edexcel. Centres become approved after having undergone a rigorous evaluation procedure in regard to systems, staff and infrastructure. Bangladesh Institute of Art, Design and Technology is proud to be such a Centre, and is currently offering HND in Interior Design (3D), Graphic Design, Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art and Computing. Similar courses are offered at ND level, save that the Fashion course is entitled Fashion and Clothing
One of the many advantages to Bangladeshi students in studying for the Higher National Diploma is in the area of cost, if a person wishes to gain an overseas qualification. By ensuring a Merit or Distinction level, HND students will only have to spend one year abroad a much more attractive financial proposition for the long-suffering parents. One further advantage, which should be taken into consideration, is that most Bangladeshi parents are not happy with their children going abroad immediately after HSC. By choosing to study HND, students will have gained another two years' experience of life, and have become accustomed to UK education before leaving the parental home. However, it should be remembered that entry to any Western University is highly competitive and entry is not automatic, with all students requiring a high standard of English for entry . The British Council does provide a highly efficient counselling and English language service to Bangladesh student.
Should students have problems at HSC level or having achieved success and want a rewarding and exciting career in the field of Art & Design they may join ND, HND or undergraduate programmes at the Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology.
