Director American Center visits CU
Md. Saimum Reza Talukder
ON 28 January 2010, Lauren H. Lovelace, the new Public Affairs Officer and Director of the American Center of U.S. Embassy Dhaka met the students of University of Chittagong (CU) in a conference at the Business Administration Faculty auditorium at CU.
In her speech she discussed different procedures to get admitted into American universities. She mentioned that anyone can find accurate information about American universities through the internet. About admission process, one must have strong academic background, good writing skill and a good recommendation letter from the professors. Side by side, good scores in GRE, GMAT or SAT are other fundamental requirements. About the visa process she discussed in details about the visa viva, manners and etiquettes and about the financial matters. After her speech, she welcomed questions from the students and gave answers.
In the entire event Lovelace was very frank and friendly with the students. She informed that the total number of Bangladeshi students admitted in USA every year is 3 times less than the number of the Nepalese students who get admission. Although Bangladeshi students have the potential, most of them possess some misconception about the U.S. admission process. So she came here to encourage the students and to tell them that USA always welcomes fresh, talented and young minds.
Lovelace was accompanied by the Senior Cultural and Programme Advisor of the American Center Sabreen S. Rahman and American Corner in Chittagong Coordinator Mirza Hasan. Prof Dr. Md. Abu Taher, Prof. Amal Bhusan Nag, Prof. Dr. Harunur Rashid and Prof. Dr. Touhid Hossain, Student Advisor to the CU were among the special guests in the conference.
Earlier on the day she made a courtesy call on Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Yusuf at his office. There she received a crest of honor from the Vice Chancellor while Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md Alauddin was also present. This was her first visit to CU and she is hopeful that students will once again consider US universities for higher studies.

Missing Cell Phone
A guy (we'll call him Aaron) was laying down carpet in some woman's home. As he was finishing, he got a craving for a cigarette. Aaron looked around and discovered that his cigarettes were missing. He did, however, notice a bump in the carpet and figured that he had laid carpet over the pack without noticing it there. Aaron decided rather than to take up the carpet, he would get a hammer and pound it into the ground so no one would know.
When he finished that, the owner of the house walked into the room and commented on what a nice job he had done.
"Aaron, The carpet looks wonderful!" she exclaimed. "Here are your cigarettes; I found them in the kitchen. Oh yes, by the way, have you seen my cell phone?"
