NSU holds 12th Convocation for first time at Main Campus

12th Convocation Ceremony of North South University (NSU) was held on 17 May 2009 at the Bashundhara main campus for the first time. Nurul Islam Nahid, Minster of Education chaired the NSU Convocation Ceremony on behalf of the NSU Chancellor and Honorable President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Md. Zillur Rahman. H. E. Mr. Justin Lee, Australian High Commissioner in Bangladesh was present as the convocation speaker. NSU Foundation Chairman M.A. Awal, Vice Chancellor of NSU Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi, Convocation Marshall Dr. Golam Mohammad and valedictorian Amith Khandakar addressed the convocation ceremony among others. NSU Foundation members, elite of the society, diplomats, students and guardians attended the ceremony. This year degrees were conferred upon 1074 students (Undergraduate: 816 and Graduate: 258) at the convocation ceremony.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, in the occasion said that, private universities, now totalling over 50 in number, have assumed a vital role in the sphere of higher education. Since its inception, the inspiring achievements, significant progress and growing reputation of North South University have been admirable. It is heartening to note that NSU graduates are well employed and established in the country and have gained admission to prestigious foreign universities, he added. He also said, the high rate of tuition and fees in private universities, however, is a detriment in
terms of accessibility for poor and middleclass bright students.

NSU Foundation Chairman M.A. Awal said that, after 16 years of dedicated efforts, NSU is now at its own permanent campus and held the 12 Convocation at its own premises. He mentioned that, NSU permanent campus comprises of six 8-10 storied building with 3 basements on 17.5 bighas land having 12,50,000 sft. floor space area with capacity for 12000 students. Vice Chancellor Dr. Siddiqi said a modern university produces scholars, thinkers and skilled manpower. It brings about ideal social changes for betterment of humanity and contributes high ethical standards. NSU is striving to do these for the good of the society and the country, he added.

H. E. Dr. Justin Lee, in addition to advancing education, Australia's aid program focuses principally on health and supporting the eradication of extreme poverty. He also mentioned that, today Australian relationship with Bangladesh has reached a new level. The relationship is no longer dominated merely by development and immigration but encompasses a partnership on strategic issues across a wide spectrum.
