Homage to Tagore and Nazrul


A programme celebrating the occasion of Rabindra-Nazrul anniversary 1414 was held at the Metropolitan University, Sylhet, recently. The students of the university paid homage to the two great poets of Bengali literature through an array of performances. The programme, arranged by the Literary and Cultural Club of the university, was divided into two parts.

The first part featured unveiling wall pictures, songs, dance, recitation and drama. The second part was replete with a cultural performance by the students. The classic characters of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam were well fleshed out by the students. The session was titled Ankhipot-e Rabindra-Nazrul.

The classic characters like Apu-Hoimanty, Doiwala, Kabuliwala, Nur Jahan, Laily-Majnu, Pallibala were well represented by the students.

Apu and Hoimanty played by Deboraj Chowdhury of CSE and Paru of BBA transported the audience back to the 19th century. Imrat Jahan of MBA and Al Nahian of BBA put up an impressive performance of the legendary lovers Laily-Majnu.

Bappy, a student of BBA, entranced the audience with her depiction of Nur Jahan.

The play Master Moshai by Rabindranath Tagore was staged by Deboraj, Sufian, Tanim and others. The episode, depicting the conversation among the student, guardian and teacher was worthy of note.

A speech of Kazi Nazrul Islam was presented by Shah Ahmed Ripon, lecturer, Department of English with apt emotion and verve that moved the audience.

The speakers in the programme said that the Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore and the Rebel Poet Kazi Nazrul Isam are at the core of Bengali literature while complementing each other.

The programme was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Khandkar Mahmudur Rahman, Treasurer, Prof. Shiba Prasad Sen, Controller of Exams, Professor Suresh Ranjan Basak, Head of the English Department, of Metropolitan University among others.

The programme ended with the lighting of candles by the performers.
