Arrest warrant of Abbas' wife to be put up near her house

A Dhaka court yesterday directed the authorities concerned to hang up an arrest warrant in tax evasion cases against Afroza Abbas, wife of detained former housing and public works minister Mirza Abbas, with a post near her Shahjahanpur residence in the city.Meanwhile, hearing on charge framing against Dhaka City Corporation Ward Commissioner Mirza Khokon in connection with a tax evasion case will be held on August 16. CASE OF ABBAS' WIFE Senior Special Judge Mohammad Azizul Haq of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court directed the authorities concerned to hang up the arrest warrant in tax evasion cases against Abbas' wife with a post near her residence in the capital. The court passed the order after police submitted a report on the arrest warrant issued against her saying that they had tried to arrest her but failed to trace her whereabouts, police said. The same court had issued arrest warrant against her on August 5, after a tax official of National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed the cases. In the case statements, Nurul Amin, deputy tax commissioner of Tax Payers' Service Wing, mentioned that Afroza evaded income tax of Tk 11,58,746 as one of the directors of Dhaka Bank from 1997 to 2002. She also evaded tax upon her income of Tk 4,67,95,634 from 2002 to 2007. KHOKON CASE The same court yesterday fixed August 16 for the hearing on charge framing against Mirza Khokon in a tax evasion case. The court transferred the case to the Third Special Judge Court set up at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar MP Hostel for its quick disposal. In the case filed with the same court on July 30, Rahima Khatun, NBR's assistant tax commissioner, mentioned that Khokon evaded income tax of Tk 12,96,863 in fiscal years 2005 and 2006. Khokon, brother of Mirza Abbas, has been absconding since the joint forces launched drives to arrest bigwigs on corruption charges. AMAN CASE Another Dhaka court yesterday fixed August 19 for the hearing on charge framing against detained former state minister for labour and employment Amanullah Aman in connection with an attempted murder case. First Class Magistrate Delwara Begum adjourned the hearing following a time petition by the defence lawyers. Aman was produced before the court amid tight security during the hearing of the case. The case was filed with Dakhin Keraniganj Police Station against Aman and six others in March this year.
