Tsunami tragedy
M. Sanaul Huq Uttara, Dhaka
Unkind nature has taken its toll. Nearly one hundred thousand people in seven countries have been killed and many more injured. The casualty number will definitely increase as more and more missing will be listed dead. Many countries in Asia and Africa, particularly the island nations, suffered serious loss of life and property. Bangladesh narrowly escaped the disaster. As we thank Allah for his mercy, we also express deep sympathy for the sufferers and pray for the departed souls. Bangladesh as a calamity-prone nation has faced some sort of tragedy almost regularly. Be it a cyclone, flood, tidal wave or tornado, international sympathy and aid always poured in. We thankfully acknowledged the friendly gestures. Now it is our turn to show our gratitude. Bangladesh should immediately send emergency medical teams with supplies to Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia. We hope all these nations have the courage and resources to face the emergency , but our humble assistance will definitely come in handy . ***As quake toll rises to 90,000 (December 31), we need to take note of the fact that the bodies of victims of the Tsunami disaster are being disposed of in the most tragic manner. The world may not care for the poor of India but let us show them that we do. Let us give the deceased a proper, civil and indeed a dignified burial or cremation. The bereaved families need to be assured that God is in full control of the situation caused by the Tsunami and that His children in India are there to render all possible help. Omar Luther King West Enclave, Pitampura, Delhi ***Just after two days when a massive earthquake struck the coast of Australia, recorded 8.1 in Richter Scale, the world witnessed another catastrophic quake "Tsunami". The devastation took place not in a particular area, but the entire region of South and Southeast Asia was badly jolted. It is a humanitarian crisis of great magnitude. Bangladesh should remain alert as the country is situated in the high risk zone. Biddut Khoshnobish On e-mail
