18 get life for Baufal double murder


Eighteen people were sentenced to life imprisonment while nine others acquitted of charges in a double murder case in Baufal upazila under Patuakhali district in 2001.

The convicts were also fined Tk 10,000 each failing which they have to suffer RI for another two years.

The judge of Barisal Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal M Abdul Matin handed down the judgement yesterday in a crowded court room in presence of 11 convicts.

The victims were demonstrator of Janata College Jalil Munshi and Physical Education Teacher of Madhabpur Nisikaanta Madhyamik Bidyalaya Delwar Munsi.

The prosecution story, in brief, is that the victims were cutting paddy on December 8, 2001 when the convicts attacked them with deadly weapons like ramdaos, pipeguns, iron rods, lathis and cut riffles and left the victims dead on the spot. They also injured at least three others.

Sub-inspector Abul Kalam pressed the chargesheet on February 15, 2002 indicting all the convicts. The judge recorded 27 persecution witnesses out of 42 and examined other documents before delivering the judgement.

Special Public Prosecutor Majibur Rahman Nantu appeared for the victims while advocate Enayet Pir Khan defended the convicts.
