The 33 rd Bangladesh Chemical Congress

Bangladesh Chemical Society (BCS) and Department of Chemistry of the JU jointly organised 33 rd Bangladesh Chemical Congress 2010 at Zahir Rayihan auditorium of the campus. This year the motto of the congress was 'Chemistry for Friendly Environment'. Dilip Barua, Industry Minister was also present at the programme.

Around 700 chemists of the country and 20 from Germany, Sweden, the UK, America, Australia, Japan, North Korea, Thailand, India, Malaysia and Brunei attended on the conference.

Honorary fellowships were awarded to South Korean renowned chemist Professor Jung-II Jin and former president of Bangladesh Chemistry Association Professor Dr Mesbauddin Ahmed for their outstanding contribution in the field of Chemistry.

Chemists from home and abroad presented their research papers on environment pollution, waste management, problems and solutions and new inventions of Chemistry. In addition, problems regarding the usage of chemicals in the industry were discussed. The role of the policy makers on this issue was highlighted.

December 14, Save the Children, UK organised a photo contest, where people tell a story of positive change through their submitted pictures. The pictures that are submitted will tell the story of hope and change that affects us positively and change the world positively. A panel of experts will look through the final pictures in the exhibition and three winners will be selected. Every year nearly nine million children die due to diseases that a completely curable. EVERY ONE is Save the Children's global campaign to save millions of children's lives. If one believes in the value of every child, the power of collective action and determination to succeed, then this contest is for them where they can come forward and show how they can save the children for everyone.

A picture is worth a thousand words and the submitted pictures in this contest can tell the story and show us the way on how we can save the children, every one of them. To participate and learn more about the contest, everyone is welcome to visit their facebook page


International Workshop on Contemporary Changes in Environment and Development at BAU

A two day International Workshop on Contemporary Changes in Environment and Development was concluded at the Conference Hall of Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on December 13.

Professor Dr. M. A. Sattar Mandal, Vice-Chancellor, BAU was present in the inaugural session as Chief Guest. Prof. Dr. S.M. Altaf Hossain, Consultant, livelihood Improvement of Farming Community in Haor Area through System Approach (LIFCHASA) project BAU presided over the session.

Dr. ANDO Kazuo, Team Leader, International Network Professor Dr. Muhammad Salim, chief organiser, workshop organising committee delivered the welcome address. Dr. Hayashi Taiichi also spoke on the session.

The two days workshop was jointly organised by BAU and International Networking Project, Kyoto University, Japan. A large number of participants from Japan, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia including Bangladesh attended the programme.

Socio-Envio Fair

The closing ceremony of the daylong Socio-Envio Fair 2010 was held on December 7 at East West University. Distinguished educationist Zillur Rahman Siddique was present as the Guest Speaker while Rashed Khan Menon, MP was present as the chief guest. In addition Prof Mohammed Sharif, The VC of EWU presided over the function. The participating clubs of this programme were BRAC University Environmental Awareness Club, Daffodil University Nature Study Club, Dhaka University-Green Voice, East West University Environmental & Social Club, Eastern University Social Policy Club, Manarat International University Environment & Adventure Association, North South University Earth Club, North South University Social Services Club, South East University Social Welfare Club, Stamford University Earth Forum, University of Liberal Arts Sustainable Development Club, and YES-TIB Group East West University. S.S M Sadrul Huda, Assistant Professor, BBA was present as the Moderator.

IBA Graduation 2010 in the Hall of Fame

IBA Graduation 2010 was organised by Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka, at Hall of Fame, Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).

The Graduation Ceremony 2010 included certificate giving of EMBA Batch 3, MBA Batch 42 and BBA Batch 14.

Vice Chancellor Professor A.A.M.S. Arefin Siddique in his speech as the chief guest of the IBA Graduation Ceremony emphasised the need of quality business education to maintain sustainable economic growth to meet our development agenda.

Mr. M. Anis Ud Dowla, President, Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) & Chairman, ACI Group, as the Graduation Speaker, reiterated the commitment of the industry in supporting the No. 1 business school in the country which has been feeding the business consistently with most efficient talent pools.

The special guest of the ceremony Professor Mijanur Rahman, Treasurer of the University of Dhaka, underscored the need for innovation in business education which should be market driven and contemporary in nature.

Professor G.M. Chowdhury, Director of Institute and Chairperson of the IBA Graduation Ceremony 2010 in his deliberation highlighted the need for global accreditation of Business Schools, collaboration through faculty and student exchange programmes and improvement through updating of curriculum and emphasis on research.
