Bdjobs.com-BFDF career planning seminar held @ Rajshahi University

The Business Studies Faculty Debating Forum (BFDF) of Rajshahi University recently organized a three-day long career-planning seminar from 4-6 February, supported by the largest job site in Bangladesh bdjobs.com. About 1000 students of Rajshahi University (RU), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Rajshahi Medical College (RMC), several colleges under national universities and several private universities of Rajshahi attended the programme at the Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium of the university. The programme was held in association with Bangladesh Debate Federation (BDF).

The career-planning seminar began with the speech of Prof. Shah Azam on “Campus Planning for the new comers”. He presented a keynote paper on the title. Then former RU student and Chief English Trainer of Project Headway Paul Biswas spoke on English Language and Foreign Education. Musfeq Us Saleheen, an executive of British American Tobacco spoke on careers in Multinational corporations at the seminar. M. Al Mamun Ansary, additional Police Super, Barisal, spoke on BCS preparation. Journalist and development worker Mostafizur Rahman Alam discussed careers in the development sector. Eastern Bank Rajshahi branch manager M. Nishadul Islam spoke on careers in the Banking sector career.

On the second day Chief Executive Officer(CEO)of bdjobs.com AKM Fahim Mashrur spoke on preparing for the local and global job market ,how to write a professional CV and how to prepare for Viva Voce. Ahmad Islam Muqsit, chairman of bdjobs.com, discussed sector wise job market trends. M.Habibur Rahman, senior principal manager of Rajshahi Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB) talked on capital market investment.

Rajshahi city corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzman Liton was present as the chief guest in the final day of the workshop while former debater Dr Abdur Nur Tushar , chairman of bdjobs.com Ahmed Islam Muqsit and former Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University Prof. Saidur Rahman Khan were present as special guests. General Secretary of BDF Sanjeeb Saha and vice president of BDF Mahfuzur Rahman Misu and renowned debater Prosanta Bhusan Borua were also present as guests. The programme was presided over by Chief Executive Member of BFDF Kamrul Hasan.

BFDF also awarded lifetime achievement to Prof Hassan Azizul Haque, freedom fighter Prof. Shamsul Alam Bir Protik and language movement veteran Golam Arif Tipu for their contributions.

ULAB Organizes Club Day, Spring 2009

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) celebrated the Club Day of Spring'09 semester with the theme International Mother Language Day on February 19, 2009. The program was inaugurated by Prof. Imran Rahman , Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university. 14 different clubs of the university organized various programs on that day. Students were all enthralled as they watched the power-point presentations, shorts plays, jatra, musical drama, comedy, song recitals, poetry recitations and concerts- all related to the spirit of Omor Ekushey. At the end of the program, the freshmen got themselves enrolled in the club of their choice.

Seventh Reunion of Old Placidians held

The 7th. Reunion of the Old Placidians Association (OPA), the alumni association of Saint Placid's High School, Chittagong (Established in 1853) was held on Saturday, February 7th. in the school premises. Attended by about four hundred alumni from home and abroad the inaugural session was presided over by Opn. Mohammed Rafique, the President of OPA while Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Advisor to the immediate past Caretaker Government was the Chief Guest. Rev. Bro. Jarlath D'Souza the former headmaster of the school in his speech as a special guest shared his experience as a student and a headmaster of the school in the thirties and sixties and said that it makes him proud that the school has scaled newer heights of excellence in last half a century. Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman speaking as the Chief Guest opined that though there is a continuous debate whether the country should have more English medium schools or not, the issue should be more of quality and not just on medium of instruction. He also emphasized that as English has become an important international tool of communication it needs closer attention at levels of education giving Bengali due importance as no education is complete and meaningful without learning one's own mother language. The day long programme ended in the evening with a gala cultural show.

Chinese Spring Festivities @BRAC University

The Centre for Languages (CfL), BRAC University, celebrated the Chinese New Year - the year of Ox, on January 23rd, 2009. The guest speaker Counsellor Liu Sanzhen attended the ceremony and Professor Jamillur Reza Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University presided over the occasion. The Academic Coordinator of CfL, Sheikh Shams also conveyed his vote of thanks. Both Chinese and Bangla were sung by the students of BRAC University as well as participants from the Development Professional Programme (DevPro) at BRAC University. Chinese is the first foreign language course offered in BRAC University. This was possible after Lu Min, a Chinese Instructor, joined the CfL team.

NSU holds seminar on 21 February

North South University's (NSU) CPDS and Dhaka language Club jointly organized a seminar on “International Mother Language Day 2009” held at NSU campus on 17 February. Commerce Minister Mr. Muhammad Faruk Khan spoke as the chief guest while Vice-Chancellor of NSU Dr. Hafiz G A Siddiqi was in the chair. Pro- Vice Chancellor Dr. SAM Khairul Bashar, Vice-Chancellor of South East University Dr. M. Shamser Ali, Mr. Razib Choudhury. Dr. Selina, Mr. Masud Khan, Mr. Kazi M Ahmed, Mis. Rawnak and Shovan also spoke among others. Faculty members, students and officers attended the event. Commerce Minister Mr. Faruk Khan informed the audience that within five years more than seven thousand languages' materials will be preserved through the establishment of international mother language institute in Bangladesh.

Cambrian College events

Mondialogo Club, an Intercultural Dialogue and Exchange initiative of UNESCO and Daimler, has been inaugurated at Cambrian School and College on Thursday through a small but befitting function. Former adviser of the caretaker government and executive director of Ain O Shalish Kendro Advocate Sultana Kamal was the chief guest on the occasion. Prof. Dr. Karunamaya Goswami, principal of the institute, presided over the function which was attended by the president of the institute Lion MK Bashar. English teacher Asst. Prof. Subrata Kumar Das of the English department is the co-ordinator of Mondialogo Club in Cambrian School and College.

Cultural function at BSS

British Standard School (BSS) celebrated International Mother Language Day, 2009, in a befitting manner. A cultural function by students and teachers depicting Bangladeshi culture and traditions was organised on the occasion. M. Nurul Afsar, Chairman of BSS and Badrum Nawazish, Vice Principal spoke on the occasion.

Int. Conf. on 'Quality Seed and Food Security' at BAU

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M.A. Sattar Mandal underlined the need for collaborative research programs both AT home and abroad in order to establish a mutual link between Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and other agricultural organizations for the development of horticulture and agro-forestry sectors of the country.

Jointly organized by Agroforestry Society, Fruit Science Society and Seed Science Society of Bangladesh, the inaugural function conference was presided over by Professor Dr. M. Sultan Uddin Bhuiya while eminent soil scientist of United Kingdom Dr. Hugh Brammer and FAO Representative Mr. Ad. Spijkers ATTENDED AS special guests.

Mr. Mahbub Anam, Managing Director, Lal Teer Seed Ltd., Mr. Shah Md. Shafiul Islam, Managing Director, Tex Apparel & Proprietor, Shah Nursery, Mr. Muhammad Masum, Chairman, Supreme Seed Company Private Ltd., Dr. F. H. Ansarey, Dr. ATM Azmul Huda and Professor Dr. Md. Shahidullah Talukder, BAU Research System were the guests of honor at the conference.

Dr. M. L. Chanda, Director, AVRDC presented a keynote speech entitled 'Nutritional Security in South Asia through vegetables and vegetable Legumes-an AVRDC perspective.’

Cambrian accords reception to language martyr Jabbar's son

Cambrian College, Dhaka celebrated Ekushey February i.e. the International Mother Language Day in a befitting manner at its own premises. The most important feature of the celebration was a reception accorded to Nurul Islam Badal, the only son of Language Martyr of 1952 Abdul Jabbar. The Chief Guest of the day-long programme was Md. Mozammel Huq Khan, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Education. Principal Dr. Karunamaya Goswami, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the College Lion M. K. Bashar and Kh. Selima Rawshan were also present.

Nurul Islam Badal, who was 1 year old when his father embraced death in 1952. Md. Mozammel Huq Khan appreciated the initiative taken by the Cambrian College authorities. Earlier he launched the wall magazine of the college named 'Rokto Sopan' created by the students of the college.

The active and creative involvement of Bibhas Kumar Joydhar, Bulbul Ahmed, Sohel Ahmed, Abu Nayeem Mostafa, Syed Parvez Hannan, Aniarban Sarkar and Nabila Zaman helped make the programme a success. All the events focused on the Language Movement and the Bangladesh Liberation War.
