Department of Law, CU observed Human Rights Day 2007

The Department of Law, University of Chittagong (CU) organized a rally and a discussion program on December 10th to observe Human Rights Day and to make the students aware of their responsibilities regarding the preservation of Human rights.

The event kicked off at around 9:30 a.m. Participated by the teachers and students of Law the long rally started from the department and ended at the Faculty of Social Science. The discussion was held at the auditorium of Faculty of Social Science.

Internationally acclaimed eminent lawyer Dr. Kamal Hossain was the Chief Guest and Mr. A. B. M. Abu Noman, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, CU was the keynote speaker. Advocate Dr. Nayeem Ahmed; Mr. Nurul Islam, Honourable Consul General of Japan in Bangladesh; Dr. Siddique Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman, Chittagong University Teachers Association; Mr. Md. Zakir Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Law, CU and Professor Dr. Gazi Saleh Uddin, Dean, Faculty of Social Science, CU were the special guests. Other notables present were Professor Dr. M. Shah Alam, Ex-Dean, Faculty of Law, CU; Mr. Md. Moniruzzaman, Representative, United Nations Information Centre, Dhaka and teachers and students of different departments of CU. Dr. Abdullah Al Faruque, Chairman, Department of Law, CU.

The topic of the discussion was “Separation of Judiciary and Human Rights”. Professor Dr. M. Shah Alam gave the welcome speech. Afterwards, Mr. Noman presented his keynote paper. Mr. Moniruzzaman and Chief guest Dr. Kamal Hossain also gave speeches addressing the students. Besides the guests, two students- Zahirul Islam of 2nd year and Bapon Chandra Das of 4th year spoke on behalf of the students. The discussion came to an end with a question-answer session. Durdana Rahman and Tabassum Mokhduma jointly hosted the event.

Atish Dipankar University Of Science & Technology

A seminar on "Measures to safeguard Trade in Bangladesh'' was organized by School of Business and Economics of Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology (ADUST) on 17th December, 2007. The seminar was inaugurated by the Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof.Dr.Anwara Begum of ADUST as a chief guest of the seminar. The seminar was presided over by Prof. M.Muzahidul Islam,Chairman, Dept. of Banking, Dhaka University while Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Chairman, School of Business and Economics, ADUST was main discussant. Among others Prof.Dr.A.K.M.Monaw-war uddin Ahmad, Dept. of Economics, University of Dhaka, A.B.M.Rashedul Hassan,Senior Management Counsellor, BIM, Jamshed uz Zaman, Executive Director (on LPR),Bangladesh Bank, Dr.Md. Yunus, Research fellow,BIDS spoke in the semianr.

As a pannel discussant Rasid-un-Nabi, Faruq Hossain, Sohel al Beruni also spoke in the seminar.

In the seminar speakers argued that Trade can be considered as an economic diplomacy and to safeguard the interest of the country we should use antidumping, countervailing techniques and also need diversified exportable commodities. Balanced development between import substitution industries and export oriented industries are required and surplus from the agriculture sector should be generated from the industrial sector. Prof.Dr.Anwara Begum argued that under WTO, we should be more cautious in handling Trade.

Victory Day Program in Khulna University

A 4-day program was organised in Khulna University to observe 'Shahid Buddhijibi Dibos' & 'Victory day'. The programs include photography exhibition on 1971, cultural program, drama show, movie show and recitation. All the cultural organizations of Khulna University along with office of the Director Students' Affairs jointly organized the programs. There were two phases of these programs. The first phase was held on the 4th and 5th December. And the 2nd phase was held on the 11th and 12th December, 2007. Photographic exhibition, cultural program, poem recitation and movie show were the attractions of the 1st phase program. In the 2nd phase there were two dramas and cultural programs. The participating organizations were Vairoby, Rotaract Club of KU, Prothom Alo Bondhu Sobha, 35mm, Ongkar-Srinuta, Theater Nipun, Nri Nattya, Readers' Forum, Ba Path, Noiyaik and Sutrapat.

Film Festival at CU For Sidr Victims

Fair Film Society of Chittagong University (FFSCU) organized a 2day film festival on 8th - 9th December at the Dr. Mohammad Younus Auditorium of CU for the Sidr victims. Three English movies, two Irani films and one Bangla film were shown in the festival. The members of FFSCU also collected warm clothes from all the halls of the university. The clothes and the amount collected from the tickets of the film festival were given to the Sidr victims.

The film festival was inaugurated by Professor Tanvir Mohammad Hyder Arif, a syndicate member of CU. On behalf of FFSCU, the secretary, Kamruzzaman Emon in his speech thanked the dean of Social Science Faculty Professor Gazi Saleh, chief patron of FFSCU AKM Aziz Ahmed and chief adviser of FFSCU Ahmed Shihabullah, for all the support and help they gave to make the festival successful.

UODA news

BBA 7th batch students of the University of Development Alternative (UODA) visited the World Bank Office on November 29, 2007. A total of 32 students accompanied by their course teacher, Mr. Siddique Hayat Khan, Senior Lecturer of UODA, took part in the field trip. Mr. S.M. Rezwan-ul-Alam, Senior Communications Officer of the World Bank made a presentation on the Country Assistance Strategy (CAS), Project Life Cycle and other
major areas where the World Bank is currently providing assistance to Bangladesh. He also highlighted major achievements made in areas like school enrolment of girls and immunization of children. The presentation was followed by a lively Q & A session.
