Seminar @ AIUB

Recently a forum of computer engineers organized a seminar titled “ Role of ICT to Enhance Research Activities” at the auditorium of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). Development Research Network (D.Net) was the key participant. The event was sponsored by AIUB.

Pro-Vice Chancellor, AIUB, Prof. Dr. Tafazzal Hossain formally inaugurated the session and thanked D.Net to support the programme. Mahmud Hasan, program director, D.Net in his speech stressed the necessity of ICT to modernize research facilities. He also gave a multimedia presentation on bdresearch.org a research portal from D.Net.

Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Siddique Hossain, advisor, faculty of science, AIUB in his closing remarks highlighted some important issues regarding online research activities. He also thanked D.Net, organizers, faculty members and students for attending. The program was planed and designed by Edward Apurba Singha, forum leader and conducted by Tamnun E Mursalin, faculty member, Department of Computer Science, AIUB.

Distance education program at AUB Rajshahi Campus

Asian University of Bangladesh (AUB) Rajshahi Campus launched the Spring Semester Final Examination of the newly introduced “distance education programme” in their campus.

In this semester final, more than 2000 students attended to pursue higher education under this new mode of education at AUB. In recent years, the distance program of AUB Rajshahi Campus has played a significant role in education. AUB Rajshahi Campus coordinator and eminent educationalist Professor Abdullah-Al-Harun said in a press conference “we are providing standard education in northern area, which is why our students are increasing rapidly”.

BOU, a public university, had introduced higher education in the distance mode while Asian University of Bangladesh (AUB) is the first-ever private university introducing ODE.

In this method, students are required to attend classes only two days a week, thus allowing people who are in services or housewives who can't come to classes every day to pursue higher education.

Training program for media professionals

Unnayan Shamannay a non-profit organization in association with European Union (EU) has taken a pragmatic initiative to train media professionals to enrich their practical experience. In this regard, Unnayan Shamannay regularly organized training programs for media personnel and enthusiastic students since last year. Now they have started their sixth batch under the title "Training Workshop on Economic and Trade Related Issues for Media Professionals" on April 11. During an inaugural ceremony, Dr. Atiur Rahman, chairman, Unnayan Shamannay expressed his gratitude to all participants and briefly gave the mission overview. Dr. Selim Raihan, assistant prof., Dhaka University, elaborated course related issues. EU representatives, Charles Whiteley and Jenni Christensen stated the role of EU to support this initiative. Twenty-eight students comprising journalists from print & visual media, students from different universities will join this six weeks long training program.

Seminar on Bird Flue at NSU

Mr Benajir Ahmed, Chairman, North South University (NSU) Foundation, addressing the seminar on "Emerging Epidemic of Bird Flue in Bangladesh: Where We Stand?" at NSU campus as chief guest. NSU Vice Chancellor Dr. Hafij G. A. Siddiqi was present as special guest and Pro Vice chancellor Dr SAM Khairul Bashar chaired the event. The Life Sciences Department of NSU organised the event.

Seminar at IUB

A seminar titled “ Evaluation practices in NGOs: The case of BRAC” was held recently at IUB. The event, organised by the Centre of Health, Population and Development (CHPD) at IUB Baridhara campus. Main speakers of the event was Dr A Mustaque R Chowdhury, deputy executive director, BRAC and Dean, James P. Grant school of public health, BRAC university was the main speaker.

Professor Omar Rahman, Pro Vice Chancellor, IUB and exicutive director CHPD presided over the occasion. Chief guest was Professor Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor, IUB. Vote of thanks was given by Dr Tanvir A Khan, Register, IUB.

The presentation discussed the evaluation of various community interventions undertaken by BRAC and ways in which the best results can be achieved. A discussion was held after the presentation. The event was a well attended one by a large number of students.

Theatre festival at Jahangirnagar University

Theatre can be an important catalyst of change in society. With this end in view, Jahangirnagar Theatre (JU) organised a weeklong theatre festival titled 'Natya Parban 2007', starting last Sunday at the campus.

With the slogan Natya Muhurto Anukshan, Natokei Kori Bishwa Srijon, the festival was inaugurated by Professor Selim Al Deen. A colourful procession went around the campus following the inauguration.

A total of seven plays were staged at Muktamancho amphitheatre). A reception was also accorded to Professor Selim Al Deen and poet Mohammad Rafique for their contribution to theatre and literature respectively.

Shikhondi Kotha, written by Anon Zaman and directed by Mustafa Kamal Jatra, was staged by Natyadhara on the first day of the festival. Natyadhara is a theatre group from Chittagong. Hundreds of enthusiastic students and teachers thronged the venue. Chhayahin Kaya, written by Jean Paul Sartre and directed by a group of Jahangirnagar Theatre (JT) activists, was also staged.
