UODA students visit the Capital Market

The BBA 6th Batch students of the University of Development Alternative (UODA) visited the DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) on 11th February '07, as part of their co-curricular activities. A total of 24 students accompanied by their course teacher, Mr. Siddique Hayat Khan took part in the field trip. The DSE authorities had arranged a special presentation for them.

The program began with an introduction on the course titled “Financial Institutions and Capital Markets (FIN-403)” by Mr. Siddique Hayat Khan. Among other topics, this course covers the roles of the capital market in the economy, and how it helps in channeling savings into the flow of investment.

On behalf of DSE, Mr. Sheikh Mohammadullah, Secretary and Mr. Syed Al Amin Rahman, Manager Research, Development & Information made the presentations.

AIUB Debate week

The ambience of AIUB during the second week of February was enlivening. AIUB Oratory Club Organized Inter-department debate and public speaking contest 2007, and the debaters were ready to attack with their biggest weapon- intellect. The debate was held in both English and Bangla. 12 teams from all the departments of the university participated. EEE (Juvenile) and EEE (Cold Crew) qualified to the finals and EEE (Cold Crew) snatched the Champion's Trophy in the English section while BBA (Nistha) won the Bangla Debate. The prize-giving ceremony was held on 14th February, followed by a Cultural program. Mr.Ehsan Uddin Ahmed, Director Student affairs of AIUB, Mr. Manzur H. Khan, Coordinator Student affairs of AIUB, Mr. Pallob, former Moderator of AOC, Mosaddek, former President of AOC and Rafel, President Of AIUB Oratory Club were present in the ceremony.

To mark the occasion of Valentine's Day, AIUB Oratory Club organized a fun debate to celebrate the special day. The topic was very catchy, “Bhalobasha Miche Asha” and there was a heated debate by the debaters Mosaddek, Rafel and Fardin from the supporting side and Munira, Jui and Nurhan from the opposing team. The event was successful and the speakers entertained the students a lot.

Solo exhibition at Institute of Fine Arts

The solo exhibition of Artist Abdur Rauf Sarkar was held in the 2nd gallery of Institute of Fine Arts (IFA). The exhibition was based on Samsur Rahman's unrevealed unique creation of "Bangla Bornomala Porichiti" which was titled as "Rubaiyat E- Samsur Rahman".

The exhibition was inaugurated by the younger sister of the artist Marjiyana Khatun on 5th march and it was open for all till 11th March.

A total 50 canvases of Bangla "Soroborno" and "Banjonborno" were exhibited in the show.

Chair in honour of Begum Rokeya at DU

To pay tribute to Begum Rokeya, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to inaugurate an honorary chair in her name. This chair is going to be established at the Women Studies Department of Dhaka University.

UGC took the decision in a meeting chaired by UGC chairman Dr. Md. Assaduzzaman.

Accordingly, a scholar will receive thirty thousand taka monthly as an honorarium and additional twenty five thousand taka per year as other allowance. The person will be responsible for preparing research paper and then present it in two seminars to be arranged by UGC.

Dr. Siddiqi elected president of AMDISA

Professor Dr Hafiz G. A Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor, North South University (NSU) and Vice president of AMDISA has been elected the President AMDISA in its annual general meeting held on February 25. Before joining NSU he was in the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) for over 20 years. He also taught for more than eight years at two US universities namely Ohio State University and Minnesota State University. He has been working in NSU since 1993.

Freshers' Reception at Marketing Department, DU

The orientation programme of freshers' of the 13th Batch BBA was held on March 15 at the Conference Hall, Faculty of Business Studies. It was a well-attended and colourful event. Chief guest of the programme was Professor Syed Abul Kalam Azad, Treasurer, DU and special guests were Professor MD. Serajul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Business Studies; Abu Syed Reja, Sr. DGM (marketing), HRC Products Ltd and Mohammad Abdul Wahab, director (Sales & Marketting) of Elite Cosmetics Ltd.

EC aided project concludes at East West University

The closing ceremony of a project titled Computerized assistance to clothing design and fashion management was held at the East West (EWU) university auditorium recently. It was a project of the European Commission under Asia IT& C Europe aid project. The project was executed by the EWU, Dhaka; University of Bremen, Germany and University of Manchester, UK. The programme was presided over by Dr. Mohhamed Farashuddin, Vice Chancellor of EWU. Chief guest on the occasion was Jalaluddin Ahmed, President of the board of directors and the special guest was Fazlul Haque, president of BGMEA.

Workshop at BRAC University

A daylong workshop titled "Integrating academic writing and critical thinking in a learner center environment" was held on March 14 at BRAC center against the backdrop of increasing needs of effective writing skills at the tertiary level. Onganised by BRAC university, the workshop aimed at addressing pedagogical issues related to academic writing while focusing on various technical subtleties and means to make academic writing more effective.

The workshop was facilitated by Beth Trudell, an English language fellow through the US state department and Georgetown University.

Classes of 3rd batch Master's starts at IUB

The classes of the 3rd batch students of Masters programme in Development studies in Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) have started.

Earlier new students were given a warm welcome through a colourful orientation programme. Prof. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor, IUB; Prof. Mofakkharul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor, IUB and Dr. Tanveer A Khan, Registrar, IUB spoke at the programme.

Orientation Ceremony at Eastern University

The orientation programme of the spring 2007 semester of Eastern University (EU) was held recently at the university auditorium. Prof. Dr. Glen Witter, international advisor, Eastern University was chief guest of the programme and S. M. Bakhtiur Alam, Treasurer, EU was the special guest. Also present at the occasion were Vice Chancellor, EU, Professor Dr. Abdur Rahim Talukder; Pro-Vice Chancellor, EU, Professor Dr. Abdur Rab, Deans of faculties and others were present at the programme.

Workshop at Beg International School, Mymensingh

Mymensingh Debate Federation (MDF) organized a daylong workshop on English Debate with a slogan "It is not too late to seek a newer world" at Beg International School, an English Medium School in the district town on February 17. Local World Vision HIV/AIDS project rendered assistance for holding the workshop.

A total of 120 students from 12 schools and colleges of the district town took part in the workshop. Lieutenant Colonel (Retd.) AHM Ruhul Islam was the chief guest while former Headmaster of Horekrishna High School Subudh Ranjan Dev and Principal of Beg International School Jajangir Md. Farid Khan were the special guests.

Md. Ziaul Haque Sheikh of Dhaka University Debating Society, Rabiul Islam and Mehdi Hasan were the resource persons. Prof. Humayan Kabir of English Department of Govt. Mominunnessa Girls' College was the moderator of the workshop.

In the evening, certificate distribution ceremony was held with Prof. Humayan Kabir, an adviser of MDF in the chair. Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Awal of Bangladesh Agricultural University was the chief guest at the concluding session while Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Sadar Upazila Manjur Md. Shahrier was the special guest. At the end, a cultural function was also held performed by local artist. Anwarul Haque Bhuiyan, President of MDF conducted the daylong programme.

IPE at Corporate Bazaar 2007

Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE) alumnae association of BUET participated at the 3 day long Corporate Bazaar 2007 which was held 10-12 February at the Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Centre (BCFCC). The main objective to participate at Corporate Bazaar 2007 was to set up a link between corporate houses and university and to collect feedback from the corporate people. Participation of IPE alumnae in Logistics Fair 2006 at Hotel Sheraton was also a part of this endeavor. IPE alumnae stall tried to inform the industry people how they can contribute in different industries through their different publications, flyers and brochures.

IPE is quite a new discipline in Bangladesh. Participation in this type of program was greatly appreciated by the industry people since they are not also aware that such subjects are studied in Bangladesh. In this program IPE stall got large number of visitors, query, many job posting, and offer for part-time consultancy and many feed backs as well. Department of IPE, BUET and its alumnae association always try to make their students updated by participating in this type of high profile programs and also organizing many seminars and workshops with active participation of leading companies.

Drama staged At RU

A play has been staged at Rajshahi University under the initiative of the teachers' club of the university. It was staged at Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium on 4th and 5th March evening. The first day was for the teachers only while the second day was for students. The name of the play was 'Dewan Gazir Kissah'. The original play was written by the German playwright Berthold Brecht and has been translated by renowned theatre personality Asaduzzaman Noor. The play began with an introductory song and dance. The performers tried their best to make it enjoyable to the viewers. The students of theatre and music and different theatre groups were encouraged by the performance.

Industrial visit by the students of Department of Textile Engineering, Southeast University

Students of Southeast University visited Lipika Fabrics Ltd, New Meghna Textile Mills Ltd and Rahmat Textile Mills Ltd under a Industrial visit programme on February 24 & 28. The programme was organised by the Department of Textile Engineering, Southeast University. The students were accompanied by Prof. Syed Fakrul Hassan, Chairman, Department of Textile Engineering and other faculty members.

Seminar organized by the Department of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University

On the 19th of February, the Department of Business Administration of Jahangirnagar University organized a seminar titled “Meet the Leader”. The seminar was conducted by Mr. Mohsin Uddin Ahmed, Sales Director of Nestle Bangladesh Limited. Students from various batches of the Department attended the seminar. The Leader talked about his career, shared his life experiences in the corporate arena, advised the students about how to move forward in order to build up a successful career.

The seminar was held in a very jovial atmosphere. There was also a presentation by Rashed bhai, an ex-graduate of the department who is at present working in Nestle'. Chairman of the Department, Associate Professor, Mr. Kamrul Arefin addressed the seminar. Among others who attended the seminar were faculties of the Department: Assistant Professor Mr. Nazmul Islam and lecturers, Mr. Shahriar Kabir and Ms. Ireen Akhter.

NSU workshop on Architectural Heritage Conservation
Old but New, New but Old

North South University organized an International Workshop on the topic 'Urban Regeneration through Architectural Heritage Conservation' in partnership with British Council, Dhaka from 15 to 18 March 2007. The workshop was conducted by Ar Michael Morrison, RPT, London; Prof Nalini Thakur, SPE, Dehli, and Dr Sharif Shams Imon, Institute of Tourism Studies. Macao.

The workshop included presentations and discussion on the cultural resource and architectural edifices of great value in Bangladesh through an exchange of idea and search for ways to overcome the impediments with the following objectives:

*To identify problems of architectural conservation in the context of Dhaka;
*To identify, discuss, and resolve cross-discipline issues;
*To form a forum of concerned individuals/groups/bodies;
*To become aware of the existing and future needs for policy ad legislation;
*To identify probable sources of funding; and
*To sensitize different stakeholders and important players

Seminar at Bangladesh Agricultural University

Bangladesh Agricultural University Teachers' Association (BAUTA) organized a two-day workshop on "Semester System at Graduation Level of BAU: Prospects and Problems". The seminar was held at BAU auditorium from March 6 to March 7 with Prof. Dr. Md. Mahbub Hossain, President of BAUTA in the chair. Vice-Chancellor of BAU Prof. Dr. Muhammed Mosharraf Miah addressed the inaugural session as chief guest. In his speech Dr. Mosharraf said that the university should be made into a unique center for quality education and research to compete with the present world.

Prof. Dr. Md. Shamsuddin presented the keynote paper with various recommendations regarding the seminar system at BAU graduation level on the concluding session. Secretary of BAUTA Prof. Dr. Md. Monjurul Alam conducted the two-day long seminar.
