IUB Debate Club - the battle goes on

Today the Independent University Bangladesh Debate Club (IUBDC) needs no adjective to define its position among other existing clubs of IUB. It has become the most successful club IUB has ever seen. The members of the club won many competitions at the National level and took part in International and All Asian Debate competitions.

Though the club commenced its journey informally at the beginning of IUB existence, the club took a formal shape in autumn 1999. It hosted Inter College Debate Championships and organized workshops for school children for debating in the British Parliamentary, Asian and World format before the Pre-World school selection and hosted the final selection of the team of 5 students who went to Wales .Two teams from IUBDC participated in the World University Debating Competition 2006 in Dublin, Ireland. These two teams were the only representatives from Bangladesh. In 2004 IUB DC hosted the first ever International Debate Training workshop in Bangladesh. The conductor of this workshop was Mr. Logandran Baligivendran Chief Adjudicator of the World University Debate Champion host for 2004-2005 Multimedia University of Malaysia.

At the same time the first ever AIDA(Australasian Intervarsity Debating Association) Adjudication test was held. Out of 8 successful graduates of the test four were from IUB. The Debate Club also participated that year at the 25th World Debate Championship hosted by MMU Malaysia, and the two participating teams of IUB earned the highest team points from Bangladesh in the last 10 years. An IUBDC Student was the Secretary General of the World Debate Council. In the World Debate Championship 2005,IUBDC scored the highest point among the South Asian teams in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia . in the All Asians Debating Championship 2005 , IUBDC student was the first Deputy Chief Adjudicator (DCA) from South Asia . The Deputy Chief Adjudicator (DCA) for the 1st Pre-worlds School Championship Selection 2005 Dhaka, Bangladesh were also from IUBDC. The club also Hosted the final selection of BDC Pre-worlds School Championship Selection 2005 Dhaka .

Three workshops were being conducted by Mr. Latif, faculty of Islamic University Malaysia who was DCA worlds, DCA Asians, and DCA Austral. These workshops were organized by and held in IUBDC. Two teams from IUBDC have successfully participated in Worlds University Debating Competition 2003 Stellenbosch, South Africa and has won the Inter University National Championships Twice in 2002 and 2003 .

The winners

The club was awarded the Best Inter University Discipline Club Award Viquarunnessa Noon College, 2003 organized by, The Daily Star. Azim Ahmed, President of the Debate Club told Star Campus about the wonderful experiences he had for the last 4 years in the club and the lovely relationship and respect all the members in the IUBDC holds. He also added that the chief patron of the Debating club is their Vice chancellor and thanked him for his immense contribution, on behalf of all the members of the club . Its not the speech but the team work and spirit that brought IUBDC to the height were it stands, he added.
